When War Horse come to the Vivian Beaumont this March, will they keep the same War Horse logo as in London, or will they create their own Lincoln Center logo from that one artist? (forgive me, I don't know his/her name)
You are in for such a treat. This is a FANTASTIC show which deserves its success. Take lots of tissues
James McMullan is the Lincoln Center in-house artist (per se?) and I think his latest work with A Free Man of Color is really great, I think he probably will design it. But on the rare chance he isn't commissioned, (see: women on the verge) whoever Lincoln Center would hire does a great job.
end rant.
It will be interesting to see what they do. Like the Public or Second Stage, the National Theatre in London uses the same font for all of its shows. I believe that The History Boys kept its font and logo when the National Theatre production came here. Lincoln Center has such a strong association with McMullan that I think they will have him create a new logo, although the current War Horse logo is excellent IMO.
I really dislike the London logo...I think it's sort of tacky and very unmemorable. Hoping for something simple and iconic in New York.
I find the image of the soldiers reflected on the horse's eye is haunting; that said the NT typography can go. So I hope if they commission McMullen, he keeps that aspect of the logo.
By the way, I saw the show last year. I left a crying mess. Looking around the audience when house lights went up, I wasn't the only one. I really hope it transfers well and is equally moving.
While I found the show itself to not be nearly as thrilling as the puppets in it, I think that tank remains one of the few literally breathtaking moments of my theatrical experience.
^Agreed completely. The stagecraft is amazing, and the puppets ARE the show (even the expansion of the human characters from the original novel can't make them any more interesting when compared to the puppets). The play itself is pretty sentimental and heart-string pulling in the way that many stories involving an animal in peril are.
I just got the Lincoln Center member mailing about War Horse tickets going on sale, and they have the London font and logo prominently featured. Usually, this mailing features the final logo, although it is also true that this show is having its tickets put on sale extremely early for a LCT show, so the final logo may not be decided yet. The last LCT show that had its tickets put on sale this early was South Pacific, and I do not know whether its mailing featured the final McMullan logo or not.
