I thought Nixon was terrific. She played Caroline more depressed and sullen and less angry than Pinkins -- though you still got the character's frustration and bitterness -- which I thought really worked and was a great choice on her part. Vocally she was more powerful and displayed more range than Pinkins (despite having to work through an allergic reaction to all the on stage fog that the production was using -- something I'm doubt anyone else really noticed and I only know about because she told me about it afterwards). It was a Broadway caliber performance in a first rate production (the rest of the cast and the design were outstanding).
I can remember thinking, as I left the theatre, that I would love to just hear Patti LaBelle sing "Lot's Wife".
Patti would probably die from over-emotion by the end of it. It would be fierce to see it happen though...

I too, saw Julia Nixon as Caroline in D.C. and was completely moved by her performance as Caroline. She, dare I say, proved stronger than Pinkins herself, showing a larger range of quited and restrained emotion and vocal technique.
In regards to the question at hand: no. Caroline requires a leviathan amount of acting talent which Ms. Holliday has/had never possessed.

I love this show. But two question.
1. Was there a show curtain for Caroline, or Change and if so, what was it?
2. Did it win the Oliver? I didn't even know. Is there a link to the winners?
Also, I didn't realize Chandra Wilson played Dot, she's got my favorite songs on the cast recording. It's funny how you slowly learn about all these people who were in different Broadway shows here and there.
The Olivier results have not been announced yet. I didn't see the show live so I can't answer your first question.
I love Chandra Wilson in this recording, specifically in "Sunday Afternoon," perfect duet right before the "Lot's Wife" explosion.

Agreed. Never realized she was in it. Very cool.
Oh okay, someone mentioned earlier about how Caroline, or Change won awards in London, but maybe I read it wrong and they were referring to the Tonys.

CAROLINE won both the Evening Standard Award and the London Critics' Circle Award for Best Musical.
I can't wait for it to open in Philly in March.
