My sister actually saw Suessical when Aaron was in it and got her Playbill signed by him. :) I can't remember if she said he was good, but I know that she did enjoy the show.
i saw the OBC... and thought the show was really good. Everything about it was 100% fun... nothing groundbreaking but all highly entertaining and visually appealing. The cast was also really great and fun (Janine Lamanna!! I still break out the CD when i need a smile!
The book was a mess. The design was well, whelming. I mean I felt like I was sitting at a production of "The Crucible" the sets were so dark. I'm not usually like this, but the sets could have been more elaborate.
The score however, was excellent. Some really great songs. And that cast, oh, can't get any better.
really? i thought the set was cute- very bright color wise... i loved most of the costumes too

I played Gertrude in my school's production, and I agree, the book is a mess. Main characters would disappear for huge amounts of time. When I came back near the end, I really thought the line should be, "I bet you forgot about Gertrude McFuzz. Well, that's nothing new; I mean, you haven't frickin' seen me since the Act II opener!" but that didn't seem as in character.
I totally agree.
Ragtime is similar, but then again it is much more of an ensemble piece and you really never loose focus on the three leads- Mother, Coalhouse and Tateh, but in Seussical the Cat in the Hat, who gets in the final bow, is in more of the show than the actress who is basically carrying (with Horton) the central storyline.
It also began the musical comedy phase where the cast reminds us constantly, we are sitting in a musical. The Producers, Spamalot, Modder Millie, Avenue Q and most other musical comedies followed in this trend.
The problem with the book is that they tried to throw every Seuss character EVER created into the mix. At times it was overkill. I enjoyed the show a great deal (particularly when Cathy Rigby was the Cat), but it was incredibly unfocused. They even had extra characters (the Lorax, the Onceleer, and others) that they got rid of. The best version of this show is the revised version that was used in the post Broadway tour. It really fixes a lot (but certainly not all) of the problems.
I never thought the Broadway sets were "dark." The Boston sets were, but not Broadway.

I shouldn't say dark, that was misleading. I meant too small to be Seuss. I just expected bigger.

The thought of Aaron Carter as JoJo frightens me.
I'm actually in a production of Seussical right now at The Spirit of Broadway Theater in Norwich, Connecticut. I'm playing Wickersham Brother #1. I think it's an incredibly fun show.

I for one never even took an interest in the show because I'm biased with my fear of the Cat in the Hat and all books Dr.Suess. Plus I never liked Aaron Carter so while I'm not going to say I think him being in it undermined it because I wouldn't know...I'll just say that I'm NO fan of Aaron Carter and was surprised I hadn't heard about him being in the show until now. Thanks everyone!

Well, I'm guessing that this Aaron Carter is much different from the Aaron Carter now. This was before all of his fame, and back when he was an innocent kid! With that being said, I love Suessical and I think it is a very fun show to put on and to watch. It's one of those feel good shows, you know what I mean?
Oh if it's not after his found fame then maybe that's why I hadn't heard about it.
Well, he wasn't a complete unknown when he was in Seussical. He was still brought in to the show because he was Aaron Carter. He just wasn't the...Aaron Carter you think of today. This was the Aaron Carter who sang bubble gum pop like "I Want Candy."
He was actually pretty bad in Seussical, I have to say. His voice had already broken, and he looked old enough to be taking the Whomobile out for a spin. That being said, I do admire him for taking it on. He seemed to be enjoying himself and trying his best, unlike another JoJo from the Broadway company who couldn't have cared less.

I have auditions for this coming up in January :). Just like every other highschool student haha, it's so popular lately. ANYWAYS lol Yea I heard Aaron Carter was pretty bad at this role, but it's not like I would have expected him to be amazing either. Im sure it was cute.
I love Seussical, my sister played Gertrude in an amateur production here and I thought it was such a funny, sweet show with such a good score(one of my favourites)
But the thought of Aaron Carter in it freaks me out.
Yep, Aaron Carter was in it.
I did the show a few months ago, and Kevin Chamberlin (orginal Horton) came to talk to our cast, and he said that Aaron Carter was really bad.
Well at least someone on Broadway's honset about awful replacements.
I saw Aaron. He was atrocious. Aside from his voice not being good at all, it seemed as if maybe it were his very first rehearsal or something. He seemed lost and stood around with his arms straight down at his side the whole time, like he were some kid they picked out of the audience, thrust on stage and told him to figure out what to do himself.
I saw him in it and there is one scene where JoJo runs down the aisle of the theatre (he ran right past me) And I was telling the people in front of me later that I wanted to trip him so that his understudy could go on. But the one thing that did make me happy was that he didnt get one of the last bows just because of "who he was" -- it went to those really deserving.
Cameron Bowen was his understudy, and he was sensational in the role. He was by far the best JoJo.
