It's the theatrical event of the decade!!!
We love you Pee Wee! Have a great stay in NYC - can't wait to see your show - I hope I love it so much, I want to marry it!
XOXO!!!

Posted: 10/26/10 at 9:37amI was very tempted by this show. To be honest I always enjoyed Pee Wee's character. However, as a 55 year old man, I thought back on Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Tarzan, Spelling Bee and Mary Poppins and remembered the empty 'let down' feelings I experienced at each. I'm so sad to concede that shows written for children just leave me cold.

Who said this show was written for children?
Have you seen any of the clips from the show when it ran in Los Angeles? I have a feeling this show will NOT disappoint. It's in a different league than Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Mary Poppins - obvie!
I'm 39, by the way ... and I already want to see it a second time.
I've also got my tickets to see Angels in America the same weekend - it'll be nice to compare the two! LOL!

Since I believe this is based more on his 1981 HBO special than the "Playhouse" series, I wouldn't worry. He appeals to a very broad age demographic and it's definitely not Disney. I hope it extends again since I won't be in the city until January 6.
How "Spelling Bee" got in the mix baffles me. "My Unfortunate Erection" anyone?

Apparently you never got Pee Wee Herman and how Paul Reubens created him. He was not created nor intended for children. His PEE WEE'S PLAYHOUSE did cater a bit more for the children demographic but the humor and tone was always intended for an older audience.
As mentioned above -- if you take a look at the 1981 HBO Special of his original Los Angeles stage show, you'll see EXACTLY how Pee Wee Herman was intended AND created: as a twisted 'children's show' and filled with tons of overt double-entendre, etc. This Broadway incarnation is based on this original interpretation of Pee Wee Herman.

Pee Wee's fans gave him an enthusiastic reception at the first preview tonight, as he received a standing ovation at both the beginning and the end. The show's fans also seemed to enjoy seeing their favorite characters on stage, laughed heartily throughout, and appeared to be having a fun time all around.
As one who never saw Pee Wee's tv show or movies, after seeing this, all I can say is I'm not sorry I missed them. I laughed a couple of times, but otherwise, I didn't find much entertainment in the evening.
So if you're a fan or a ten year old, I'd say you might enjoy yourself.

I have been a big Pee-Wee Herman fan since childhood. I would give anything to see this show; however, I don't think it's going to be possible.
Have a great run, Pee-Wee!

After Eight, I really think you missed something about him. If you haven't seen his movies or the television series, you may not like the new Pee-Wee Herman Show very much. Go back and at least see Pee-Wee's Big Adventure.
I am so excited for this show, and I am so upset I'll be missing it. Life long Pee-Wee fan! I own the movies, the original stage show, every episode of the tv series (amazing box sets) and even some of the old toys from when I was a kid. Including the pull string doll. lol! I am so glad Paul is bringing Pee-Wee back! It's long overdue. Although, I notice that there's more Paul than Pee-Wee in his character now, but still it makes me so happy to see him back in his suit! I can't wait for the new movie. :)

"After Eight, I really think you missed something about him."
You're absolutely right. I'd say I missed everything about him. :)
"If you haven't seen his movies or the television series, you may not like the new Pee-Wee Herman Show very much. Go back and at least see Pee-Wee's Big Adventure."
I have a feeling I would miss that one too. I think if I miss it, I really won't miss it. :)
Speaking of dolls and such, I noticed several patrons brought Pee Wee memorabilia with them. I noticed a woman brought a large Pee Wee doll with her, and was bouncing it on her knee before the show began. Another person came dressed as Pee Wee.
I found the show a fish out of water on Broadway. But the audience seemed to have a great time, so maybe it will do well.

I liked the PeeWee movies and such....I just don't care to see it on Bway.
And yes, for the limited run that it's scheduled for, its fans will love it, I'm sure.

Welcome Pee Wee!
I was there last night, and indeed, this vey special event is best enjoyed by his many long time fans, who packed the house last night. The roaring aplause started as soon as the lights dimed and a standing O greeted PeeWee when he appeareed on stage. When the curtain opened, another round of aplause came for the set, and then again each time another character, human or inanimate, utered a line.
It's hard to give away any spoilers, we all know what to expect, but I just wnat to say this show is a lot of "fun".

I would love to see this again! Saw it in LA and enjoyed it so much as did the audience! It was cool to see parents who grew up with Pee-Wee taking their kids to see the show... while not intended for kids I do think the show is appropriate and isn't overtly adult in nature like his HBO special
anyway... Paul Reubens is such a great guy... I loved how he offered a Q&A for people who bought tix in advance only to have them move the show to a later date and venue... he didn't have to do that but he loves his fans and wanted to show his appreciation!
