SUM: True, I just dont want it to be horrible... (Plus I would love a DVD of the new stage version!)
I just think back to seeing the recent PHANTOM movie and thinking, "God, how could I have enjoyed that show back in the 80's???"
Also: NPH is fantastic as Toby
2.) that Judge Turpin's "Johanna" was cut from the touring production.
I believe that Judge Turpin's "Johanna" was cut during previews of the original Broadway version, but they still recorded it for the CR.
I'm still pulling for Jamie Bell to be Tobias (of "Billy Elliot" and "King Kong"). He's the perfect age, looks the part and my God he can act. It would be awesome he could sing, I don't know if he does.
NPH's voice was passable at best live in the role...pitchy ( as our Randy Jackson would say.) Im sure tweaked in the studio he would be fine. And to the poster who mentioned key changes...keys were lowered all over the place in the revival..possibly to compensate/mesh for the quiter chamber sound that was desired. Just a possibility.
This thread has been hijacked..... Anyone ponder how hot Wentworth would be in a sailor costume?
The thought of him in the sailor uniform makes me want to open up my cracker jack box. :)
Eponine: I would assume Jamie Bell could sing as we was a member of the National Youth Music Theatre when he was younger. I'd love to see him in the film too, though.

EDIT: HTML problems/Him being Jamie Bell not Wentworth Miller.

Jamie Bell would be a good choice. Apart from Depp i reckon Burton will try and go for an all british cast. I'm open to most casting suggestions, but i'm sure there will be many true fans of the show who will not be happy.
I love Sweeney Todd, but we have to remember that stage and screen are very different. The Producers and Rent featured original cast members that kept many Broadway fans happy, but the general public stayed away in droves.
I really think that Tim Burtin is a good enough director, that his choices will be good ones.
One thing though Tim, please leave Helena at home.
I dunno about the British casting. Anything British is a tough sell here in the states. If he wants people to see this movie, he's gotta cast like Dreamgirls and Hairspray. I do not think this film would have ever been made without Depp. He is the PERFECT choice for this role. Hmmm I wonder if Zeta-Jones is in consideration. They really need a good Lovett.
Paulyd: The problem with the Producers wasn’t the casting, it was the overall direction. It is such an honest translation from the show; it's hard to fault it in any way. I think in the future it will be hold up as a good record of the show.
You are right about Rent, it was totally miscast. With the exception of Rosario Dawson and Tracie Thoms everyone was way too old. Adam Pascal looked like a joke. As much as I cringed to hear it, hindsight tells me Timberlake would have been a better choice. At least he is still HOT. Adam was and never will be. Film is a different medium.
The gentleman before you didnt say Rent was miscast. I think he implied that it was the wrong "profit making choice." The film wasn't made for the masses, which made it good from an artistic view. The high pitched squeal of Justin would have kept me, and most artists I know, away from that atrocity. I really don't think that Sweeney will be made for the masses either. Try explaining the puns in A Little Priest, or any other clever Sondheim lyric to a pop star audience, it'll sink quicker than the Titanic.

mejusthavingfun, i totally agree about Rosario being the only good part of the RENT film
right on!
:P
I saw Rent the first week it opened on Broadway. The movie did a fine job of re-creating what I saw that first week and while the cast may have aged a bit, the energy and intensity that Mr.Larson envisioned was still there. For me, thats a job well-done.
Are you serious Hamlet? Columbus specifically made Rent for the masses. It got a wide release and had a huge budget. Sweeney is not going to be an "art" film either. Though "Rent" was sort of a pet project, the studio had every intention of making money. I wouldn't be surprised if they make songless horror trailers for Sweeney just to not scare away the general public.
As far as Sweeney, I think "A Little Priest" is one of the few songs they will keep in the movie. I can't remember that song having anything too complex in it for mass appeal. If anything it is the one song people will remember. That is the song I'm most excited for in the with Depp.

well, most of SWEENEY is singing, so they are going to keep most songs, and of most all the songs, i doubt "A Little Priest" would be kept in...wouldnt translate as well on film, and doesnt exactly move the story
they still might keep it, but thats my opinion...
with Sondheim helping the movie along in production, i think it will be great
In Philadelphia and the surrounding area, Rent was released in the art house movie theatres and not the main theatres. Perhaps in other areas of the country that didnt have arthouses it was in the mainstream theatres. All movies are made with a profit in mind, but the profit v. integrity is different for all films.
As for A Little Priest.....fop.
I could easily imagine a heavily-truncated A Little Priest transitioning into God That's Good.
Now back to Wentworth...so hot. And he did get very good notices for that Human Stain. In fact, if I remember correctly, he and the other younger actress got much better reviews that Anthony and Nicole. Can he sing, I have no clue.
This movie doesn't need to be cast badly and this person would be a bad choice.
Wentworth Miller can sing...he did an interview a while back and said that he did musicals a bit and wants to try singing more and do more films of musicals..nice casting...
