I just got out of seeing the wonderful new Wes Anderson movie, ASTEROID CITY. And it prompted a few internal questions.

  1. I wish he would write/direct a play! His work is so indebted to the theatre (especially Asteroid City), and it seems like if he wanted to take up playwriting, he could be one of the rare writers to draw ticketbuyers — especially if he also directed or “supervised” it. And I’m sure this is something his longtime collaborator Scott Rudin brought up over the years.
  2. I wish he would direct a movie-musical! I don’t know if he’d even be interested in that, but his style would be perfect for the right material. GENT’S GUIDE or something Gilbert & Sullivan came to mind. Could he be right for a MAME remake?
  3. Scarlett Johansson is doing wonderful work in the movie and reminded me of Roz Russell at times. I’d love to see her back on the stage (it’s been a decade), as I think she’s grown as a dramatic & comedic actress since then. What should she do (aside from the obvious answer of a new play)?

Now I’m imagining a Wes Anderson Mame, with Scarlett in the lead role opposite Melanie Lynskey as Agnes. Sure, Scarlett is on the border of too young and Melanie is on the border of too old, but Anderson isn’t the type to shoot for perfect realism anyway.

One tip of the hat to the original I’d enjoy: Jon Batiste as Beau’s bandleader duetting on the title song. Batiste’s “adventurous jazz showman and virtuoso/vaudevillian” persona sometimes feels like the second coming of Louis Armstrong’s persona.

A Wes Anderson Gentalmens Guide is truly fantastic. I am honestly surprised Jefferson Mays hasnt worked with Wes Anderson, seems like a match made in heaven. While i was watching ASTEROID CITY I also began to think how cool a Wes Anderson directed show would be. I would worry that his aesthetic would be hard to do on stage, but maybe with some help from Tina Landau it could work!

Oh my,

YES!! A hundred times. Yes!

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

ScarJo would be the perfect Sally Bowles when the West End production transfers.

Yes, Jefferson Mays and Wes Anderson are a match made in heaven. And obviously Rudin would have turned him on to Jefferson if he didn’t know his work already.

Thought I suppose W.A. has shot all his recent films in Europe, and Mays is often busy on stage.
