There's a place for us,
Somewhere a place for us.
Peace and quiet and open air
Wait for us
Somewhere.

There's a time for us,
Some day a time for us,
Time together with time spare,
Time to learn, time to care,
Some day!

I watched this tonight....probably the first time in 10 years. I had forgotten how wonderful this is, how moving, how sad. I had forgotten how great the dancing was.......

Simply amazing

An absolutely brilliant movie
This was the movie that made me look at movie musicals in a whole new light
And it didn't hurt that it starred one of my all time favorite actresses: NATALIE WOOD
And dubbing be damned, she made the character of 'Maria' her own.
She will always be 'Maria' to me!

I'm in total agreement about Natalie Wood. It's a shame she wasn't nominated that year from this instead of Splendor in the Grass. She might have one the Oscar.

She was wonderful in Splendor in the Grass....it would be hard for me to pick between the two roles, which was better

I think that she was great in Splendor, too, but that Oscar night was West Side Story's.

Marquise, I love that photo. When I was 15, I had a shrine to Natalie Wood in my bedroom, complete with Christmas lights all around it.

Natalie Wood = amazing.

She never, ever aged. Her face always stayed the same - absolutely gorgeous. It didn't hurt that she has immense talent to back the looks up.

Anyone have the box set WSS DVD...I loved watching the behind the scenes stuff and hearing Natalie Wood actually singing. All pretty interesting stuff.

I just bought the DVD a few weeks ago. LOVE it. George Chikiris (sp?) was so ridiculously charming. And Rita Moreno was sexy and adorable at the same time....

I loooove West Side Story!!!

Definately one of the best musicals ever. And the best movie-musical ever.

Marni Nixon is amazing, idk how she matched all those different actresses' voices and accents in the different movies she dubbed for.

Do you all remember good ol' George from White Christmas? I freaked out when I saw him. He's one of the pretty boys with Rosemary Clooney in her nightclub scene.

I truly do enjoy this show! Of all of the productions I have been in, I think it was the most difficult, but in the end was the most magnificent and rewarding and FUN show I have ever done. As far as the movie goes, I have the DVD, and I definitley think its really well done. I mean, the dancing is amazing, but I have always thought that the movie version of "America" was not as good as the stage version. But I guess you can't win 'em all.

neocomposer - I agree, the stage version of America with Rosalia and Anita bickering is better. But that's just my opinion.

I love this movie. Rita Moreno is wonderful in it. I always found it curious that they switched Officer Krupke and Cool in the movie. It works better for the story actually, but I like the comic relief Krupke provides in Act II of the stage version. beacause Act II is pretty err....heavy (to say the least).

Hey, Marquise --- regarding "dubbing be damned," I agree with that.

I personally don't care if they use a ghost singer any more than I care if they use a stunt double in an action scene. The job is to make me believe that they are singing or falling off a building. (Or both! Wouldn't that be a nifty trick?)

Natalie was enough of a singer, as was Deborah Kerr and Audrey Hepburn, to convince me they were doing the singing. They understood how a person looks, breaths, etc. physically when singing. That's why (along with the legendary Marni Nixon) they did such a great job of trickery with these performances. There are moments in all three dubbed jobs, where I can't even tell where one voice ends and the other begins. That's a job well done.

So... GOOD dubbing doesn't bother me in the least... BAD dubbing drives me crazy. Honestly there are times in recent films I WISH they would have dubbed certain performances. Do it well, and I'd prefer it to a bad or mediocre voice. But they have to convince me it's them. That's the hard part.

I've even seen actors singing to their own vocal playbacks on film, and it looks like they're being dubbed. It's not easy to do convincingly, no matter who's voice is coming out of the speakers.

i was trying to go to bed early last night but made the big mistake of browsing thru a few channels before i put my head down. i came in at i feel pretty. i can't resist this show.. i love tony and maria's "wedding" in the dress shop. i turned it off right after riff and bernardo were stabbed. um....is that a SPOILER? i cry everytime. the first time i saw this movie i was in the third grade and i was afraid to cry because it was very uncool and i remember the PAIN of holding it back. this is some of the most beautiful music ever, imo. i love how the themes are woven together and tell the story.
