So I was watching West Side Story the other day and I thought to myself that I would love to see this movie re-done w/ the original choreography of course. I want to know who would you cast in the roles if they did it. I think if Rosie Perez were 5-10 years younger, she would kill as Anita.
I understand why someone younger might want to see performers they can relate to more, but I just don't see ANY reason to remake this classic film.
Its a 10 time Oscar winning master class in how to make a movie musical. I think we shouldn't mess with that. Its just my opinion of course.

Not sure WHY anyone would try and remake WSS or even why one would want to. It may the single most successful stage-to-film adaptation ever made, a gigantic box office success, multiple Oscar-winner, a classic, one of the standards by which other musicals (and films) are compared. Heck, you could re-release it now and it would STILL Make money. What director in his right mind would try to remake it, knowing full well he can't equal the original? What studio would spend $100 million (which is probably what it would cost now) to re-do something so legendary? Why try to fix what ain't broken?
If you want to remake something, why not pick one of the DOZENS of stage shows that Hollywood has f---ed up over the years and do it right this time -- from Man of La Mancha to A Little Night Music to The Wiz to Mame to A Chorus Line (which maybe should be left to be a great stage musical and not bother to screw it up again by filming it).
Margo, don't forget about the Rosalind Russell film of GYPSY for being one of the fu**ed up movies made of stage shows.

Actually, I can think of a lot of reasons to re-make this film. Not the least being to cast actual latino actors in the respective roles.
Regardless of how wildly successful is has become. It's fairly laughable to anyone not a fan of musicals who sees it now. For many reasons, including Natalie Wood.
No No No No No.
This movie should never be touched. Ever. Leave it as it is.
I have to side with the "leave it alone" crowd. The movie is fantastic as is, and Margo is right - there are SO many other failed movie musicals, why mess with a good one? I know it may be blasphemous to say so, but I think in some aspects the movie surpasses even the stage version (though admittedly I've only seen regional productions). For instance, I LOVE the switch of Cool and Gee, Officer Krupke - I think it actually makes more dramatic sense the way it's done in the film.
I agree, even if a director has a very good vision for a remake and a great cast could be gathered up...it's just one of those movies you should never touch.
A thousand times no! I hate remakes. They are never as good as the original. Why go see a pale comparison when I can watch the original on DVD?
Are there any remade movies that are better then the originals? Even the remakes of Craptastic Films of the past end up making the originals look like Citizen Kane.
Make something new!

Isnt the point of redoing something the opportunity for change? If you were to keep the original choreography what would be the point. if you're going to do something, do it fully.
Why not pick a crappy movie and remake that instead?
It would make a crappy movie even crappier
Remaking WSS has the be the craziest thing I have ever heard. The musical is probably the best stage to screen transfer ever.

Thats absolute rubbish, so many people i know who have just seen west side story LOVE IT.Its a genuine Movie musical masterpiece.
Maybe the younger generation wont like it because it doesn't have Zac Efron in lol
As a latino who would scoff at the idea of a greek playing latin today, leave it alone!
It is amazing Beymer basically vanished after this film.
remaking West Side Story would be like remaking The Sound of Music. only a retard would try.
i think they'd be better off sticking to putting other shows they've yet to do on film if they want to make a movie musical. so many options out there!
Musicals that need a remake include
A Funny Thing
Jesus Christ Superstar
Irma La Douce (the movie version cut the entire score).
Irma would be a great show to revive.
No, I don't see it as a remake. And I just don't see a remake happening.

This should never be done. But if it is, just don't cast Rosario Dawson.
New movie - No. It shouldn't be touched ever, as many people above me have mentioned over and over that it's a classic and shouldn't be messed with. It's like Gone With The Wind...if they ever re-make that and mess with it i'll cry.
Revival of the show on BWay - Hell yeah! I'd LOVE to see it come back to the stage for a return engagement.

NO, NO, NO, NO!
I have seen this movie more times than I care to count and still find that it moves me. It tops my list of my all time favorite movies. Why mess with perfection?
I can see it now...Jennifer Lopez as Maria - HA!!
