re: What Actor Was So Good They Made You Cry?

Lili Taylor has made me cry twice on two separate occasions: Aunt Dan and Lemon and Landscape of the Body. I walked down 42nd Street crying for a good ten minutes after Landscape.

As far as musicals go, I was fighting back tears during Jacques Brel..., especially during the combined wallop of Natascia Diaz's "My Death" and Gay Marshall's "Marieke". "Fable" from Light in the Piazza always gets me whenever I hear it, too.
"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

Meh, I don't care if it's technically not a show, but Gerard Butler in the Phantom movie, when they kiss and he starts crying and especially his "Christine, I love you." No one in the Phantom show made me cry that hard.

Let's see also...Idina in Wicked, Amy Spanger and Joe Cassidy in Feeling Electric, Adam Pascal/Daphne Rubin-Vega/Jesse L. Martin/Anthony Rapp in Rent (Rent 10), and almost all casts I've seen in productions of Miss Saigon and Ragtime. Those are crying killers.
"If there was a Mount Rushmore for Broadway scores, "West Side Story" would be front and center. It snaps, it crackles it pops! It surges with a roar, its energy and sheer life undiminished by the years" - NYPost reviewer Elisabeth Vincentelli

There are alot that come to mind. Heather Headley and Adam Pascal during "Elaborate Lives", more recently, Orfeh during "My Son"

Patti Conheur during LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA - clearly when she was on as Margaret. I have NEVER cried so hard in a theater.

Mary Stuart Masterson AND Laura Benanti in NINE - the first for the song "Be On Your Own" - the second for the way she played out the scene where Guido puts the glasses on her face - I was reduced to a sobbing idiot EVERY TIME. The two of them alone were worth the price of admission.

Now what would you say if today I started over? Without a thing but this taped together four leaf clover And I'll pretend like everything is already alright And I'll run toward the sun till the castle's out of sight

Victoria Clark. 100 percent. I cry every time I listen to parts of LITP on my ipod. What a performance, and what a voice!

Also, Celia Keenan-Bolger in Speeling Bee will tear your heart out. That girl is one of the brightest stars on Broadway.

Sarah Saltzberg as Logainne in Spelling Bee. When she's eliminated on "vug" and shows her vulnerability, I get emotional.

Katie Clarke's reaction as Clara to Aaron Lazar singing "Love to Me" brought me to tears both times I saw the show.

Sarah Uriarte Berry in Taboo - "Il Adore"
Jaime Lee Kirchner in RENT (2004 non-eq tour) - "Without You"
Marcus Paul James in RENT (2005 non-eq tour) - "I'll Cover You: Reprise" I've seen him twice on tour, in 2004 and 2005, but for some reason he made me turn into a sobbing little bitch in 2005 when he sang that song.

re: What Actor Was So Good They Made You Cry?

Over the years --

*Richard Kiley in MAN OF LA MANCHA - practically the whole show

*Only in the recording, but - Richard Burton singing the reprise of the title song in CAMELOT ( when he tells the little boy to keep the ideals of Camelot alive)

*Some scenes in Les Miserables - the death scene of Fantine, A Little Fall of Rain, Empty Chairs at Empty Tables, Do You Hear the People Sing ( especially the latter, as I had first seen the show when we had a similar political upheaval in our country)

*Ending of PASSION, with Michael Ball and Maria Friedman, also the time when Michael sings "I Love Fosca" in a very powerful and very dramatic fashion

*Once Before I Go, with Hugh Jackman in THE BOY FROM OZ

* And a few more tearful moments in a few other shows, including some straight plays

re: What Actor Was So Good They Made You Cry?

Hmmm...I confess, I teared up during:

For Good -- Idina/Jennifer Laura Thompson
Fantine's death, still do
Gavroche's death in Les Miz
A Little Fall of Rain -- Les Miz
Harris Yulin made be BAWL during the last scene on "Diary of Anne Frank". Even though everyone knows how it ends, the scene was just wonderful!!!

I'll Cover You (reprise) -- almost every time I hear it
No Day But Today (the end version) -- BAWL central!
