ClapYoHands, unfortunately I don't remember which Phantom I saw in London. It was in the summer of 2000 though.
Even though a lot of people don't understand, and some people like to make judgements about people who see shows multiple times, I think it's really cool that so many people are willing and able to support their favorite shows like this.
Hair 10 or 11 times
5 or 6 times on broadway
2 times in new haven for the start of the tour
1 in hatford
1 back on broadway at the st James
Prior to this ....
2 times at the downtown cabaret Bridgeport theater 7 years ago
1 time in Waterbury ct
1 in new haven for the official 25th anniversary tour
And a very small school production in new haven
I've seen Next to Normal more than I care to admit on a public forum. After this weekend, I will have seen Hair 4 times, with tickets to see it twice more. The other two shows I have seen tons of times are Les Miserables and Cats, but neither on Broadway - just tours, regional productions, and high school shows.
WONDERLAND .. 9 times over 3 productions/years (Tampa, New York)
and
Les Miserables 6 times
Phantom and Les Miz: Around 10 times each (Bway and touring)
Rent: Probably 15 times
Spring Awakening and American Idiot: 5 times each
Miss Saigon: around 5 times
Billy Elliot: 3 times
It seems like almost all of the shows people mention here are MUSICALS, and very few plays
Do you think that's cuz Musicals tend to run longer / are open-ended, while plays are often Limited Runs?
Or that straight plays don't hold up as well for repeat viewings for more people, that the Musical experience is something you get more lost in?
Too, I imagine there are some plays (like Macbeth, or Hamlet) that people may have seen multiple times, but as different productions
This thread just got me thinking, and I was curious about other people's thoughts
American Idiot 16x
Spring Awakening 12x
Wicked 9x
Legally Blonde 6x
Hair 6x
Next to Normal 5x
RENT 4x
Most are a combination of Broadway and tours.
Young Frankenstein twice (tour)
Phantom of the opera (tour and vegas)
I dont live anywhere near nyc so shows are limited:)
Phantom- 7
Mamma Mia!, Billy Elliot, Lion King, Jersey Boys - 4
I've seen countless local and professional theatre productions of the same shows. Honestly, I see pretty much everything at least twice. I'm always up for seeing something more than once. I always get something new out of it.
Phantom4ever, I think you would have seen Scott Davies' Phantom.
Equus- 8x, original production, 2x revival (was shocked to realize I had aged from the boy to the psychiatrist...)
Pippin- 4x
Jesus Christ Superstar- 4x, NYC, London, revival
Three Penny Opera- 5 or 6x, in the Park, Broadway, revival
Sunday In the Park- 1x original, 4x revival
Sweeney Todd- 4-5x, Broadway, NYCO, Teeny Todds
Lion King- 5x (bringing kids for their first Broadway show)
Mary Poppins- 4x (bringing kids for their 2nd Broadway show)
Xanadu- 5x (mostly on the stage)
Spring Awakening- 11x
American Idiot- 9x
off-Broadway
Headwig and the Angry Inch 10-15x lost count
AGermano Totally agree about American Idiot! Each time was different, each time I noticed something different set-wise or character- wise. Saw it 11 times. Would have continued to go throughout this summer if it hadn't closed. I also saw RENT 4 times, once on Broadway, once on tour, once off-Broadway, once at a local theater.
The Original productions of
SWEENEY TODD - 8 times
DREAMGIRLS - 8 times
SOPHISTICATED LADIES - 6 times
A DAY IN HOLLYWOOD/A NIGHT IN THE UKRAINE - 6 times
SUGAR BABIES - 6 times
THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE (Central Park and Broadway) - 6 times

Not technically Broadway, but I saw the original "Les Miz" seven times in its 8-week, pre-Broadway run (DC, 1987). I had a seat once, and stood six more times afterward. That production and cast (Colm Wilkinson, Frances Rufelle, Terrence Mann, Judy Kuhn, Randy Graff, etc) was perfection to me.
I saw the show late again in its original Broadway run (September 2001). It was a Sunday night performance five days after the fall of the Twin Towers. There were only about 150 people in the audience, and the ushers invited everyone (even the balcony folks) down to to the front of the orchestra. It became a very intimate evening. The cast was on fire that night, and there were audible sobs during 'Empty Chairs'. That night will always stay with me. There is nothing like live theater to bring out a cathartic cry -- even for a 50 yo guy like me.
Next to Normal, 2x on broadway, once on tour.
By the end of September, I'll have seen The Book of Mormon and Follies twice, though, so...
Next to Normal 6x (4x on Broadway, 2x on tour)
Spring Awakening 3x
Hair 3x
American Idiot 3x
Legally Blonde 3x (2x Broadway, 1x tour)
And several others 2 times...
Les Miserables--26 times (6 in New York, 20 on tour)
Wicked--19 times (9 in New York, 2 in London, 8 on tour)
Miss Saigon--15 times (11 in New York, 4 on tour)
Time number 20 is coming up for Wicked in NY in January.
Time number 27 for Les Mis is coming up in Raleigh in February for the 25th anniversary tour.
I really do enjoy each individual performance separately--when you know a show intimately, right down to the blocking tracks for the ensemble, it's fascinating to notice the little differences in interpretation.

American Idiot - 3 times
Les Mis - 3 times (Broadway revival and twice on tour)
Wicked - will be seeing it for the 3rd time (on tour) in October. I'm taking my niece and nephews to see their first Broadway show. I've been looking forward to introducing them to musicals for years. I'm finally able to.
All Broadway:
Chicago--around 70 times between 1999-2003 or so, all on Broadway, once on tour and once in London. I have seen it since 2003, but not obsessively. The $20 front row rush tix were awwweeeeeesome. I lived at the Shubert.
Cabaret--40 times, and, um, 37 of those times were from August 2003-January 2004 when it closed. Yeah. (in my defense, I volunteer ushered for the vast majority of those performances)
The Full Monty--maybe 15 times?
42nd Street--around 8 times, and then I eventually started working on the show and saw it roughly 48 billion times.
Into The Woods revival--10 times
aaaand Follies. I saw the Kennedy Center production 6 times, and at present have six tickets for the Broadway production; I suspect I will also rush it a few times, too.
Lots of other shows I've seen 2-3 times, too many to count, either due to a casting change, bringing parents or friends, etc.
