West Side Story -- voted the most influential musical of all time by playbill readers, also considered by many to be one of the best musicals of all time -- and many consider it to be the best musical score of all time -- everyone discusses (and has discussed on this thread) the genius of Sondheim, but I advise you to discover the genius that is Leonard Bernstein. And though I find some flaws in the movie, it is considered one of the best musical movies ever made, so it's an accessible means of getting into the musical.

I'd also be a tad careful of the R&H movies -- I love the King and I and The Sound of Music (of course), but didn't like Carousel or South Pacific. It wasn't until I saw the production of South Pacific of this year, and watched the '94 production of Carousel at the Lincoln Center Archives that I discovered how great they were, but I certainly am not a fan of the movies.

"If there was a Mount Rushmore for Broadway scores, "West Side Story" would be front and center. It snaps, it crackles it pops! It surges with a roar, its energy and sheer life undiminished by the years" - NYPost reviewer Elisabeth Vincentelli

1990 and earlier? Hmm, so many brilliant shows. Some of my favorites are:

Well of course any and all Sondheim (especially Follies)
Carousel
City of Angels
Barnum
Mack & Mabel
Pal Joey
and if you can find a copy, The Mystery of Edwin Drood

Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!

I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

For a great vintage Kander and Ebb that isn't Chicago or Cabaret, try "The Rink"

I discovered it while researching their work from that time period and LOVE listening to it. Chita Rivera playing Liza Minelli's mother? How can you go wrong!

Yeah, get the recent revival of Kiss Me, Kate. It's very accessible.

even though it's from 1991, I suggest Crazy For You, all songs by Gershwin. based on Girl Crazy, but so good.

You must remember all the same that at the crux of every game is knowing when it's time to leave the table... And it's important to be artful in your exit. No turning back, you must accept the con is done... It was a ball, it was a blast. And it's a shame it couldn't last. But every chapter has to end, you must agree.

There's a special kind of people known as show people. We live in a world full of dreams. Sometimes we're not too certain what's false and what's real. But we're seldom in doubt about what we feel.

It is a far, far better thing I do, than I have ever done; it is a far, far better rest I go to, than I have ever known.
