Posted: 4/8/04 at 12:07amI'd like to see one season where revivals are banned and producers are sensible enough to produce new works by brilliant, inventive and young new playwrights and composers including Tesori, Jason Robert Brown, LaChuisa, Lippa, Guettel, etc...wishful thinking...huh?

Tesori is wonderful and Violet needs to be seen in full production. They brought it back a few years ago when they re opened Playwrights Horizons and it moved me.
I loved Millie but Violet was breathtaking.
That being said it is not a happy silly musical it is a dark show but it was incredible.
Bring back Violet for most of us who have not seen the full blown production. It would work at the DR2 OFF BROADWAY or the main theater at the Public.

Posted: 4/8/04 at 12:44amI would love to see My fair Lady since it is one of those classic musicals I have never seen on stage. And as mentioned in another thread Sutton Foster would seem to be perfect for Eliza.

Goodness, Corine, I expect and accept repeat thread subjects from the newer posters, but for crying out loud, Woman, you are a Broadway Legend. I expect more from you. How about...hmmm..."Who should replace Bernadette?"
Oh, to answer your question, I think a full scale MOST HAPPY FELLA with Bryn Terfel, Kristen Chennowith and Michelle Pawk.

I'm not sure about Chenoweth in The Most Happy Fella, possibly give her a couple years. Maybe Rebecca Luker? Michele Pawk would be a fantastic choice for Cleo. I would love to see this musical revived - one of my favorites.

PS - SOUTH PACIFIC & A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC!!!!! Now THOSE are crucial need of Broadway revivals.

Posted: 4/8/04 at 7:36amDon't stone me but CARRIE would be perfect for an Off-Broadway mounting, the good parts of this show were stunning, as a smaller, chamber type musical it could work.

I remember seeing it during it's brief run almost by accident and finding that whenever Carrie and Mrs. White were onstage it was on fire, but then the crappy dance numbers would pop up and I wanted to run from the theater, but those duets between the two leads were thrilling!
In the right hands it could still be valid and Betty Buckley would rule as Mrs. White, again!

1st: West Side Story would be sweet, a new hip version.
2nd: I wish they would put Bat Boy back on Off-Broadway. It had to close after the 9/11 slow down, I think it would have run for a good while longer, because it was still getting a lot of press in its final weeks.

Many hate the "revival" issue because they want to see original material. Well, that's fine and dandy, but why NOT revive past shows? What about the newer generations of Broadway patrons who wish to see the shows they missed out on? It's ORIGINAL to them! SOUTH PACIFIC hasn't been on Broadway since 1954!!!
WEST SIDE STORY hasn't been on Broadway since 1980.
CARRIE hasn't been on Broadway since 1988.
STARLIGHT EXPRESS 1989.
PIPPIN 1977.
MAME 1983.
FUNNY GIRL 1967!!!
And then there are those shows who didn't get a fair shot. BAT BOY didn't even make it to Broadway, but I'm sure it would have gotten rave reviews.
I want MAME and FUNNY GIRL, in addition to BAT BOY and SEUSSICAL, although SEUSSICAL I can wait a few years for.

Posted: 4/9/04 at 10:38amI'm so with bestofbroadway on this one. Enough with the revivals. I tend to stick to regional/community theatre with the occasion trek from DC to Broadway because too often on the GREAT WHITE WAY its the same old-same old. It would be nice to see more original works staged on BWay that reflect current social/political/business trends. What has been more dramatic this calendar year than the Martha Stewart trial, the political tug of war over same-sex marriage/partial-birth abortions/stem cell research, or Condi Rice squirming in the hot seat before half the planet yesterday before yet another 911 commission. The events & movements (even if in effigy) provide plenty of fodder for creative minds to produce works that engage & captivate audiences of today. The alternative is to continue quibbling over color-blind/language-dialect-authentic casting in bastions of antiquity that have been revived 10x already.

Sweeney Todd!-being a teen I never got to see the original run, only the concert version on DVD w Miss Lupone and Mr Hearn which I fell in love with, plus a clip of Lansbury singing "Worst Pies..."
I would love to see Pippin--I went to a theatre camp and because of weird scheduling I only got to see half of it, but I loved it!

"A full out multi-million dollar production of DREAMGIRLS."
HELL. YES.
I just got familiar with this show and I LOVE it. It NEEDS to come back to broadway in all its glory.
Otherwise:
My Fair Lady
TOMMY!
West Side Story
As much as I love A Chorus Line, it's too soon for it to come back. Same with Into The Woods---it was just revived two years ago! Same with Batboy, too...give it a while, and let someone revive it with a brand new approach to the piece.
