With the news that the Oscars are joining the SAG Awards - now The Actor - on YouTube, what would it take to convince YouTube to take the show and make it easily accessible worldwide? Who would end up being the biggest stumbling block? (The producers of the productions themselves?)
The SAG Awards actually look great on YouTube, it's a much smoother production. Smaller perhaps, but so much better without all the filler.
The Jimmys look great on YouTube each year as well, and I wouldn’t mind if the Tonys eventually head there too.
And by the way, the ceremony’s current CBS / Paramount+ contract ends next year, as of this moment. A major change could occur sooner than we think.

Oh wow. So the change would come for the 2026 ceremonies? or are those still slated to appear on CBS?

The SAG Awards only aired on YouTube once back in 2023. Since then, they've airing exclusively on Netflix.
I've been wondering the same thing myself. I have seen people excited about the idea of the Oscars heading to YouTube in part because that means they would have less restrictions as if they were on a regular broadcast network. That would also apply to the Tonys, where a livestream would include presentations for every single award as opposed to having half on the pre-show and the other half on CBS.
Speaking of which, it's also worth noting that there has yet to be an announcement regarding details for the next Tonys telecast (i.e. airdate, venue, etc.). I wonder if Skydance's recent acquisition of Paramount (CBS' parent company) has anything to do with it.

It does seem odd nothing has been announced yet. Normally a venue and airdate have already been announced.
