What a Waste: 2005 Tony Awards

Boy. Could the American Music Awards or even the People's Choice Awards be better? An unfortunate waste.

Started good with Billy...went wrong with the an overblown Hugh melody....Keri Russel?? ...That's the best Charity can do?....Sara R. won for that?....Thank god we found a replacement for Mary J. Bleigh in Aretha...Chita killing one of the composers...

Perhaps running a video of BKLYN would have been just as good.

this was one of the best theatre seasons in years. there will always be highlights and lowlights, that is the nature of award programs. to completely write off the programme is quite unfair, mr. negitive.

re: What a Waste: 2005 Tony Awards

Actually his name is Mr. Tuttle.

Hellacoolmichael it is the elitist scum of this board that keeps this board interesting. Without them we would have threads that read like a Wicked playbill.
BSoBW2: I punched Sondheim in the face after I saw Wicked and said, "Why couldn't you write like that!?"

re: What a Waste: 2005 Tony Awards

Well, I enjoyed this year much better than last year. I'm glad I wasn't reading this board while I was watching most of it.

re: What a Waste: 2005 Tony Awards

Wow. It's always good to hear from the clueless club.

And dear cluless feinstein, the tv show had nothing to do with the actual shows on Broadway. You see, Aretha isn't currently in a show. And neither is Kerri.

Sorry that the obvious is too hard to grasp.

I personally find the oscars to bomb on many occassions but that does not mean the movies nominated were bad by any means! I dont know about anyone else but I imagin it to be quite hard to perform in front of every single one of your peers (and Broadway legends!)
(Martha Graham from a letter to Agnes de Mille) "There is a vitality, a life force, a quickening That is translated through you into action, And because there is only one of you in all time, This expression is unique. If you block it, It will never exist through any other medium And be lost. The world will never have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is, Nor how valuable it is, Nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours, clearly and directly, To keep the channel open. You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work. You have to keep open and aware Directly to the urges that motivate you. Keep the channel open. No artist is pleased. There is no satisfaction whatever at any time. There is only a queer, divine dissatisfaction, A blessed unrest that keeps us marching And makes us more alive than others."

And you all thought the Aretha butchering of Sondheim was Must See TV?

God forbid we use that time to maybe feature some of those neglected things called "plays".

Not a complete waste... but definately fell far short of what it COULD HAVE BEEN. To me, the title of this thread should be more like, "Missed the Mark: 2005 Tony Awards" or "Unfulfilled Potential"...

ooooooo "unfulfilled potential" Excellant wording! Couldn't agree more!

re: What a Waste: 2005 Tony Awards

I didn't think the Tonys (the show) reflected the greatness of the Broadway season. I too thought it was a bit lackluster.

And haha to Mr. Tuttle, that first post was enjoyable.

Right, because that's exactly what we're saying. I mean there is no in-between. You either have to love everything about the telecast or damn the whole thing to hell. God forbid anyone enjoy it, even if they didn't enjoy everything about it.

re: What a Waste: 2005 Tony Awards

tuttle, that was completly inappropriate. i don't think saying that the show had good points and bad points makes me "clueless." why insult me? what did i mean when talking about the actual shows on broadway? i meant that the awards part made the telecast interesting. there was a lot of filler-crap that had nothing to do with theatre, but that doesn't change the fact that it was an interesting and over-all enjoyable show. why is it necessary to hit below the belt?

re: What a Waste: 2005 Tony Awards

Why don't we just take the time out of our lives to bash things about every single show at the tony's that we can, because by god that will change the votes.

Quit being cynical and accept the performances and the winners. You can't change them, and I'm glad.

re: What a Waste: 2005 Tony Awards

Hell..you obviously have no clue what's being discussed here. Back to the sand box.

The fact the this show had at its disposal the best and brightest writers, producers and technical folks makes this productions failure more evident. The Tonys are a major award that can have whomever they want.

And this is what we got? Sure there were one or two decent prepared bits. But when the project on a whole fails to entertain, its short comings become obvious.

And you think Mr and Mrs America were sitting there saying "This Aretha thing is awsome"?

Mr. and Mrs. America had better things to do then watch a bunch of theatre people rewarding themselves...like watching reality tv or Desperate Housewives.

re: What a Waste: 2005 Tony Awards

okay, tuttle, that makes more sense than your original post. your last one, i agree with. they could do great things with the talent at their disposal and yet, the show ended up being mediocre. and i couldn't tell- was the sandbox comment directed towards me?

re: What a Waste: 2005 Tony Awards

Viet..you're right.

We don't have to worry about Mr Public basing their opinion of theater on this show.

No one besides the people here were watching it.

re: What a Waste: 2005 Tony Awards

AMEN Tuttle...with the directors we have at our disposal, one would think we could have come up with a far better representation of who we are and what it is we do...

The performers we had on that show tonight were among the finest in the country...but many came across as pitchy and less than attractive.

Piazza seemed to come across stunningly, but that seemed to be where it ended.

I know emotions are high and people are sad about losing colleagues, but Jesse L. Martin...pitch?!? And can someone remind me what Julia Stiles' connection with Broadway is- cuz the girl has the personality of a butter knife.

WE CAN DO BETTER THAN THIS...

This is the ONE opportunity we have to present ourselves to the rest of the country, and we give them a fay host doing a 30-minute medley about not wanting to dance? And an aged gospel singer who seems to not have appeared on a stage since the early 70's....SINGING A DUET?

RISE UP! DEMAND BETTER! Write to the league...tell them to ask Mike Nichols or someone with some television/film experience to direct a brilliant awards show. This is LIVE THEATRE...We should have the advantage over the other awards shows in that we should know HOW to present LIVE!

WE CAN DO BETTER!

Carl Magnum was underwhelmed. What a blah TONYS. Nothing was exciting and even Nathan Lane bombed. Just a bad TONYS this year.

Its better than nothing
So I was sitting in my cubicle today, and I realized, ever since I started working, every single day of my life has been worse than the day before it. So that means that every single day that you see me, that's on the worst day of my life.~Office Space

re: What a Waste: 2005 Tony Awards

Here's a thought for consideration. Move the Tony's to cable. HBO or Show time. For me the worst part of the evening was the endless commercials.

I can only imagine how awful it was for the people acutally there having to sit through all those breaks.

re: What a Waste: 2005 Tony Awards

Mr. Tuttle, they did play a video of Brooklyn...at the beginning of the telecast.

re: What a Waste: 2005 Tony Awards

I was there this year and last year. This year seemed like wayyyy too many commercials, and just wasn't as good overall. I still enjoyed it, but not as good as last year. Aretha was my lowlight, was something wrong with her voice?
