Hi! Heading to New York the first few days of July for my bi-annual theatre trip. I'm usually pretty set on my list of shows but this time around feels... difficult?
I have time for four shows. Death of a Salesman and Cats are a lock. I cannot wait to finally see Laurie Metcalf on stage!
29 year old gay guy here. I love plays (loved Liberation, Oedipus, Bug, Stereophonic, Purpose and Appropriate on recent trips). I'm a bit bummed that I'm just missing The Balusters and Becky Shaw which I'm sure I would've enjoyed. I also enjoy musicals but it's looking bleak lol. Death Becomes Her and Ragtime were great!
Proof and Joe Turner's Come and Gone are my other two slots, as of now. I've never seen a production of an August Wilson play. I'm a bit bummed that I'm just missing Kara Young in Proof and a week too early to catch her in The Whoopi Monologues. Anything off-Broadway that I'm missing?
I could do a Thursday matinee of Girl, Interrupted or Rocky Horror, if either are really worth a marathon. I'm more inclined to spend the afternoon checking out Whitney Museum for the first time.
I only trust this board for recs so thank you for always coming through.

I do think Rocky is worth it. The Whitney is fabulous but won’t be going anywhere any time soon. Missing Proof is a blessing. Whatever you do, enjoy! Sounds fun. :)

I don't recommend Proof. Terribly directed (and sometimes acted) revival. Joe Turner however is fantastic, there are couple of phenomenal performances in this play that can't be missed. And of course, I recommend The Lost Boys to everyone. The book is a bit fluffy, but the stage craft is a marvel that can't and won't be replicated anywhere else.

The Savior at the Atlantic. Birthright at MCC. Henry VI at the Public. Giulia at The Shed. I haven’t seen any of these but I intend to.

I see that the Classic Theatre of Harlem is doing Othello at Marcus Garvey Park starting July 2. It's free & easier to get tickets than the Public's Shakespeare in the Park.

Here's a Bwy World article about the cast

Don't see the lost boys. it's the worst piece of **** to hit Broadway in years.

We're elder gays who caught 5 shows a week ago. Our take--
Avoid ROCKY HORROR like the plague, unless you're a dyed-in-the-wool Luke Evans (or Rachel Dratch) fan. The fun there ran out fast for us.
We loved Act 1 of THE LOST BOYS, a show very firmly in the more-is-more camp. Major gay (and bi) storylines are front and center in the script, and the showbiz staging is top-notch. (About Act 2, the less said the better.) And the choral singing was ravishing.
Our favorite show of the week by a mile was MASQUERADE, the immersive restaging of Phantom of the Opera. We were at the 8pm pulse (you pick one of 6 entry times), and My God were those performers astonishing! Just a magnificent night of pure Theater (and Camp and Horror and Heartbreak) that makes most proscenium shows you'll see pale in comparison. Applause to Diane Paulus and her team for pulling off this magic trick with such aplomb!
