whoops! i hit post message when i wasn't even done.
another factor was the time of year the studio decided to release this film.
why do the studios feel the need to showcase or release musicals during the holiday season regardless of the musical's subject matter? is it because singing is automatically related to the holidays and it just seems like the "right time of the year" to release them?
RENT is hardly the type of musical with happy holiday themes. Most families choose not to see a film with heavy messages over the holidays regardless if they are sung or not. They choose either family oriented comedies to take the kiddies to or escapist/adventure flicks.
For further proof one only needs to look at the Top 10 money makers over the course of the past three weeks since RENT has been released.

One factor in the release timing Marquise may have been the fact that RENT is set in the holiday season.
The majority of the action happens right before and the weeks following Christmas.
the movie is not original

The movie failed because it was BAD, just BAD, plain and simple. there's your answer, now stop making ****ing rent threads
The movie is not original.
huh.
Okay.
Neither is Harry Potter. Or Walk The Line. Or Chicken Little. Or Brokeback Mountain. Or King Kong.
That's absurd. Problems that there may be, that's not one of them. Plenty unoriginal movies are highly successful.
first of all, rent is original. It's not a re-make of anything. Look at all the other movies being made--harry potter, king kong, pride and prejudice--are you insane?
It's no MORE original than any of those -- it, too, is derived from something pre-existing.

RENT isn't original....as it is based on something.
But that's not why it failed.
It failed because there was not enough guy-on-guy action, right art?
Yeah, I think Mark and Roger should've had some serious sex on the rooftop.
Which is also why IN MY LIFE failed.
But fret not, originality, Idina naked, and GUY on GUY action will all be in MARCH OF THE PENGUINS- the 'musicless' Musical by BSO, Joe Brooks and ME!
Let's keep art2 as far away from this as possible.

You're lucky it's winter time! Otherwise I'd put you under the sun, melt you, and make you into a thing that those people use to darn socks.
Yes.
And Penguin - What do you mean - musicless?

Oh! Sorry Grateful. I thought that was some old bee-bop band. Now it all makes sense.
But, I'm sorry...SG...all audition pieces must be in the form of a jingle.

Em, I'm with you on the Wax Lion love. Poor little guy needs to snuggling to clam him down.
Aw, Wax Lion! I've missed you. Be careful, someone may attack you yet for attempting to manipulate our opinions on the movie, or tell you that you need to move on with your career and give up on Rent.
I think now would be a good time for Wax Lion and I to go on our lunch date.
