Your answer to my Creel question is the same as the answer to YOUR original post. They are actors. Of COURSE a gay man can play a straight character just as easily as a straight man can play a gay one.
There is no "one" way to be either. I know men (and women) of both sexualities that SEEM like the opposite.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

If I just said, "I agree," would people stop attacking my question and just answer it if they have an answer? thank you in advance.
But, to help dramamama, my question is not meant to be homophobic or heterophobic, it did not say, "Do you think only gay people should play gay people?" I am not talking in binary, black/white categories. I know some actors can muster up feelings that come across as true/genuine regarding situations they have never been in; so, I'm not saying straight people can't act gay, and vice versa. I have never wanted to imply any of this. And, yes, I agree that my initial impressions of the photo shoot cannot be used as evidence against Will's performance (geesh, people turn down your paranoia radars). My open-ended question was to see what other people's impressions were of this.

I think the question proves that the original poster is:
A. A closeted Homo projecting his own feelings of ever being cast or seen as Gay and insinuating that all straight men are afraid of being seen in a feminine light.
or
B. A gay male who is attracted to straight hot dudes like Mr. Swenson whom he knows he can never attain because he feels inadequate in either size or looks and therefore has self-loathing tendecies he needs to deal with somewhere other than The BWW message Board.
Either way this thread is moot.

I wish people would stop trying to figure out the question, "projecting" their own suspicions into it, and answer only if they have an answer. Since I am neither (A) or (B) of curtainpulldowner's polarized, binary considerations, then I wish people like curtainpulldowner who don't have an answer would stop trying to answer because they are wrong about their suspicions.

To be fair, the question really didn't make sense until it was clarified. The title of the thread really does make it seem like you're questioning his ability to play gay as a straight actor. If I was answering that question, I'd point out that it's not like he's never played anything but 100% straight roles. I thought that as Berger he came off as completely believably in love with Creel's Claude in Hair, for instance. Not the same type of role he's playing in Priscilla, but still.
As I said before, I do think he often comes off as a little shy/awkward in press stuff in general and therefore it probably doesn't have a whole lot to do with the subject of the show. Well, if Nathan Lane played straight poorly, and you had that opinion, then I would ask you to post that.
But you haven't seen Will Swenson play gay, so you can't have an opinion on his portrayal- good or bad- based on of an out of character photoshoot. They're in street clothes and standing around posing for the press, that indicates nothing of how the show will look onstage. Judging his portrayal based on these pictures makes about as much sense as complaining about the bare set and the casual costumes.

Oh, I forgot,
C. A person with no sense of humor.
And for the record I did answer, I think he looks very comfortable in the pics.
Seriously, most good actors (and I think Mr. Swenson is one)
don't look at it as "playing gay", they approach a character as a human being with whatever attributes they develop as an actor.
If the character is foreign and has an accent or a cripple and has a limp, those are characteristics they can add to the build.
You can't "play gay" anymore than you can "play black" or "play straight" there are all kinds of gay people, and as many have stated he hasn't even "played" the role yet and that is why you are being "attacked or critcized" for asking a silly question.
