What is there really to think about? He's an actor. Looking at the pictures, he seems to be happy to be in this show. Love the picture with the pink luggage.
My question was not meant anything bad about Will; he's an incredible actor/singer/presence and uber-free with his (and others') sexuality, which makes him perfect for the role! I was thrilled he was going to do it for so many more reasons. However, I posed the question after looking at the pictures just posted, and I thought he looked uncomfortable or exaggerated, especially compared to the ease/look of the other actors. So, I wondered if anybody else had thoughts about this. I didn't want my question to be specific because I didn't want to narrow the question and responses but to see if any body else had any thoughts of it. I can see why I got so many on the defensive, however!
I agree he does appear to look a li' uncomfortable/unconvincing in most of the shots. I LOVE WILL SWENSON & EVERY ACTING JOB HE"S DONE! (Love Hair especially,l his Morman DVD movies and all the work he has done with kids choruses) I also was looking at the photos & for some reason he looked less comfortable than the others. I could care less if he is straight or gay, (I know he has announced he is straight), I am still a fan and looking forward to a FABULOUS RUN OF PRIsCILLA! Updated On: 9/25/10 at 03:34 PM
Well, if Nathan Lane played straight poorly, and you had that opinion, then I would ask you to post that. But, I wish all of you who are prone to call me names, etc, stop posting. If you don't understand the question or if you're perturbed because you think I'm being spiteful, or whatever, just move on. But, If you had any thoughts about the answer of the post (not the question), I'd love to hear it.
Yeah...I mean, what were they thinking? He should know better than to pretend to be something he's not. And on a STAGE, in front of 2,000 people, no less! What nerve.
And how do we feel about Gavin Creel being in love with women (Millie, Hair, etc.)?
I could care less....it's acting. I can't wait to see it.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.
Wow, my question really did spark a disgust! Tazber, if the show/roll call for authentic performances of Spanish women, and these singers weren't excellent in portraying that, then your response has merit. The show is a farce, so anything goes in this production (and I can't wait to see it fly). Now, I asked people about their thoughts of Will Swenson playing gay in the part. This would be similar to asking people what their thoughts would be of Bernadette in Night Music before any one has seen it. Most of us can imagine what she would be like, and for me, I like wondering. Again, to clarify my questioning, I imagined Will portraying superbly gay (authentically and loudly gay), but when I saw the photos I thought I saw some uncomfortableness (not that he is homophobic, but I would imagine that any heterosexual man would after a while feel a bit uncomfortable/tired (unconsciously) hugging, kissing, acting gay. So, I think it could bring up a point that self-accepting gay men will not portray that hint of uncomfortableness (check out the ease of Nick Adams). I'm not trying to make any discrimination remarks but just see if anybody had any thoughts about all this. I suppose we could say the same about witnessing Kelsey Grammer. I suppose I think I have some sort of gaydar detector for truth, and I don't necessarily get a complete performance when I see straight people playing gay. But, again, I'm not trying to say anything specific, I was curious if others had any initial reactions to all this.
Not to be nasty or sarcastic, but you seem to have already answered your question. You said you imagined him playing the part "superbly".
Maybe he was tired during the shoot. Who knows. But again, I think he looks fine. I don't think "gaydar' has anything to do with it. I mean, how do you want him to look? Shot mid snap while saying "hey girl!" Then you would say that he is mocking gays or something. I am sorry but the question and the explanation really don't make much sense. So many straight actors have played gay parts and done fine. I don't think you can question his performance from a photo shoot.
If Gavin couldn't play a heterosexual young man who was erotically and romantically attracted to a woman, then no, I don't think he should play this (regardless of how great his acting skills and how nice of guy he is). To Gavin's credit, I believed he hit it spot on. I like to see real, in depth performances of truth, and when I saw Will next to Nick, it was apparent who was straight and who was gay (my initial reaction). And, yes, you're right, Will is not being a character while taking these photos, he is being Will, but then why be uncomfortable (I see it, others don't, I understand). And, then when he was acting "gay," he is exaggerated. So, yes, I will hold off on making any conclusions until I see the show. I was just wondering...
