Honestly i thin broadway needs more not hype..but-- advritizement/appreciation? im using all the wrong wording.but being 14 people i hang out with people that barely know what broadway is anymore...young kids are all into popstars and tv-. i dont want to grow up and have my generation kill the atmosphere or forget the meaning of true theater!

Something fresh that hasn't been done on Broadway yet. A musical that is more substance than spectacle. Lea Salonga on stage. A show that has a balance between substance and spectacle.

I think (with the recent loss of AIDA) we need another Disney musical because "Beauty" and "Lion" were two really great shows. I wasnt too impressed by AIDA though.

re: a good comedy.
Spamalot, I think fits the bill. And a musical comedy to boot!
I'm looking forward to this one very much.

I WHOLEHEARTEDLY AGREE WITH YOU!!! When do you think Sweeney will be revived next, you think it will be awhile since it is so popular in opera houses?

I think Broadway would do well with revivals of some of the classics. But I do think that that needs to be balanced out with new material from new people, as well as some new from old people. However, I would hate to see any more pop musicals hit Broadway.

Problem there, Ruth, is that producers have to start cultivating new audiences as the old one dies off. And how do you lure in a generation raised on MTV and ADD action movies? By giving them music they'll "relate" to -- i.e., BROOKLYN. And RENT. And MAMMA MIA.
We're probably stuck with the "pop" musical for some time to come.

Not another Disney-show or a show that uses some pop-artist's greatest hits as score.

I understand that producers need these pop musical shows to keep Broadway alive. I have no problem with these shows (I loved "Mamma Mia!") But I don't want to see Broadway turn into strictly pop musicals. Also, if producers lure young audiences into these shows, in some ways they are giving them a false sense of what Broadway is all about.

I think the Disney shows introduce Broadway (and most of the time true theatre) to children. Because of this I would agree that Disney Theatricals is important.

With a stone clutched in his hand
He was only a boy
But he knew someone must take a stand
There will always be a valley
Always mountains one must scale
There will always be perilous waters
Which someone must sail

Broadway changes. The shows in the 30s were very different from the ones in the 80s, which were in turn very different from what we have today. When COMPANY opened, a lot of the critics were thrown, because it was so different from anything done to date, and yet it spawned an entire genre that just now seems to have jumped the shark. If pop musicals are to become the next Broadway wave, it'll be because the market puts them there.

I know that this could be the next "Broadway wave," but it does sadden me that nobody can write new music, and that pop musicals resort to an "American Idol" sound. While something good may be able to come out of this new music, I still hope there will be something other than pop musicals.

I think that Pocohantas would make a great Broadway musical...the sets could be really breathtaking and it seems to me like a good idea.
Another DISNEY musical:
The Little Mermaid- would be tough to pull off but then again look @ Julie Taymor's amazingly surprising work on The Lion King.

I also think Broadway needs:
The next Bernadette (someone who will have the longevity to stick around for a while...although we do have a few rising stars)
A great musical-drama (havent seen one of those in a LOOOOOOONG time)
Revivals of:
Annie
A Chorus Line
Has ONCE ON THIS ISLAND been on Bway? I havent seen it but I will this year...the middle school my brother goes to is doing it so Im pretty excited to see it. Is it a good show?
