---INTERMISSION---
Just wanted to say, "Nice thread, broadway guy"!
Well done, you.
WOW! What an amazing story, g.d.e.l.g.i! Do you know which song she performed?
John, I'm puertorican so spanish is my first language, I just listened to the Argentine anthem and I quite liked it. Perhaps too long, but overall very beautiful.
Great thread indeed!

By the sound of the description, "Buenos Aires" was definitely one of the numbers. The Liza Minnelli Scrapbook indicates that she also ran through "Don't Cry for Me, Argentina." Ken Russell added to his comments in that book: "Waves of electricity, waves of power, swept through the studio, waves of sound, waves of sex [...] At the eleventh hour, it seemed we had found our Evita."
What a pity we never got to see it! (Apparently Ken Russell still had the audition film. Would love to see that someday, if his estate ever sees fit to release it.)

If anyone can sell "Buenos Aires" It would definitely be Liza. Hearing this description makes me warm up the idea of her as EVA. Liza has a special twinkle in her eye when she performs and she definitely has the star quality and the pipes to make Eva Come alive on screen. Its a real shame it didn't work out.

At least there's hope. That would be amazing to see!

I third that.
I can't even Imagine to think how Amazing her "Rainbow High" would be.
I think that prior to that point in Eva's life, she has been the mistress (if not literally, then figuratively) and has been kicked out and told to "move along".
See, I feel it's the opposite of that. (forgive me, I haven't read the entire thread, so I don't know if I'm about to repeat something that's already been said) For me, what makes the song work is that the Mistress is the antithesis of Eva as illustrated thus far in the show. The Mistress is indeed a metaphor for the descamisados, bringing some irony to the actions of Eva, but her plaintive questioning "So what happens now?" is precisely what Eva did NOT do to get where she was. Eva made things happen and she detested weakness. "Don't ask any more" is how you get out of the cycle of the victim and take control, just as Eva did.
Does the Mistress represent a young Eva? Perhaps, but we don't get that piece of the Eva puzzle. If anything the Mistress could be Eva's reminder of the point in her life she made the decision to take control.
WAIT! I found it! The lost audition tape of Liza as Evita!!!

Besty you are too much. A million theater queens are cursing you right now! LMAO!!

I agree, but I don't see that as an "antithesis" of who she 'is' as much as a realization of who she 'was'. I think her realization regarding who she 'is' (or the woman she has become since) is demonstrated by how she treats the mistress. In a way, I can see a vindictive Eva (literally and figuratively) evicting her past self by evicting the mistress with such loathing.

Best, that was plain evil. One does not simply toy with other people's emotions like that.

Somewhere in Spain, someone thought that was the most beautiful performance they've ever seen.

My heart stopped when i saw that link..and then i opened it

Anyway, I was watching a clip of the 2006 london revival and I have heard that Idina Menzel was offered to do the london show but turned it down? Anyone know anything more about that?
Back to the point: In the clip of the London revival it seemed like Eva had some genuine animosity for the mistress. Perhaps Evita was Jealous in one way or another?
Wouldn't you be upset and show animosity to the woman who was banging your man on the side?

She got a death threat from Lea Michele. Basically it said, "Lauren Ambrose thought she was going to do one of my roles. And then she changed her mind."
At the time it was reported that Idina Menzel turned down EVITA, but I believe people on the board (and maybe she did this too) corrected those reports stating that she was invited to audition, not offered the role. I'm intrigued by the idea though I honestly don't see her in the role at all.
That description of Liza's audition is exactly what I imagine Liza to be as Evita. She's the kind of performer who "asks to be loved" (was it Arthur Laurents or Stephen Sondheim who said this in relationship to how she'd be miscast as Mama Rose because of this? ), and she begs the audience for it and succeeds in such a fascinating way; I really think she'd have been something special as Eva Peron.
Didn't someone post an old article basically stating how Streep had been cast as Eva but then turned down the project quite unexpectedly? I believe the article cited that she demanded too much money and left because she wasn't given her rate--something I don't buy for a second, as Streep did plenty of small films after her second Oscar win.

I can't see Idina as Eva either. Her voice is all wrong for that part and Her voice has already taken a toll with Wicked. I could be wrong but I dont think Idina has the voice power to do Eva 6 times a week:/

I have a feeling Streep chickened out. It seems like Many actresses and singers are a bit afraid of this part. I don't blame them. My guess is Streep didn't think she had the voice to do Eva ( Madonna should have came to that conclusion also).
It was fascinating to here all the possible women who could have replaced Elena for the 2012 revival. I believe Sierra Boggess was up for the part but turned it down? Lea Michelle's name was mentioned also ( I actually think she would be a great Eva). Wasn't Karen Olivo and Jordan Sparks mentioned also?

Maybe. But the article someone posted on the board (I'm sure those of you who are not lazy like me will do your homework and link to that thread) mentioned how Streep had worked very diligently on getting her voice up to snuff, even going as far as secluding herself in Sting's (I think it was Sting) studio in some island. Apparently, she blew everyone's mind with her singing after working really hard on it. So many rumors about the casting of the film, and it's a shame that the actual film is nowhere near as fascinating as all the intrigue that occurred between 1982-1995 leading to Madonna's casting. I enjoy the film for what it is, but God would it have been amazing to see a real actress just throw herself into this role in ways Madonna simply was never able to do (and I say this as more of a fan of her take than others).
EDIT: Here's the link to the NYTimes article that details the entire process. Again, I don't believe for a second that Streep's salary demands "kept escalating."

Well, whether it is a pointless song or not, it's still my favorite song in Evita.
