Posted: 5/5/04 at 1:46pmwe would be out on a really good book to read in general, and out on an amazing musical. why do you dislike Wicked so much? what if Rent had never been written? Broadway needs more new shows like Wicked to bring in more audiences to experience theatre as a whole. Wicked does that for a lot of people that normally wouldn't see a show.

So wait...the only thing that is important is that new shows exist? They don't have to be good?

"we would be out on a really good book to read in general"
No, we wouldn't. How did you arrive at that conclusion?

If there was no RENT I doubt there would be things like Avenue Q and BARE, and Sondheim would have a monopoly on broadway, but at least La Cage would still get revived next year
I think Wicked is wonderful. I also think there are alot of other shows just as good, which didn't get their time to shine. It's not us who decided what's good, it's the producers and the masses.

We get that it's your personal o-pinion that WICKED isn't good. However, unlike a whole lot of other shows (that you deem better), WICKED is getting a standing ovation 8 times a week to a sold out audience. PLEASE don't patronize the people of this board by thinking that the your preferences are the pentultimate ones.

"...Eleven year olds would never have been inspired by the profoundness they read into the sappy lyrics of Defying Gravity"
Ok, don't necessarily agree with the other points, but major kudos for that (although it might be even better without 'sappy'...that's understood).

First of all, the book upon which Wicked was based existed before the musical, if I'm not mistaken. Second of all, every single post in this thread is an opinion. Get over it.
And if no one had written Wicked, I wouldn't feel like scratching out my eyeballs every time I saw the names "Kristin and Idina." Bleh.

Maybe you shouldn't read this post, cause it's gonna sound patronizing.
There's a difference between something being good and liking something.
I wholly recognize that MAMA MIA is not good...but I had a blast.
I fully recognize that SWEENEY TODD is good (no...great)...but it bores me to TEARS.
Do I think WICKED is good? No. Do I think less of anyone (including some of my best friends) who love it? No. It obviously struck a chord in them.
I do, however, have a problem with the thought that the only thing that's important is that an audience shows up. The quality of show that an audience sees is just as important, if not moreso.
PS Just to be a little more patronizing, use the word 'penultimate' correctly.

Posted: 5/5/04 at 2:07pmThird of all, THAT'S a patronizing statement: "However, unlike a whole lot of other shows (that you deem better), WICKED is getting a standing ovation 8 times a week to a sold out audience."

Namo - I wasn't being patronizing to other shows. I see "other shows" all the time. (Some of my favorite shows are other shows, heh) I was just trying to say that just because you and robbiej don't like WICKED doesn't mean that thousands upon thousands of other people don't. NO reason that all those guys are wrong and you're right.
robbiej - Yeah, the quality is just as important than the audience. Lots of people go to see AIDA. Do I think that's a good show? No. But I've seen WICKED, and I think it's one of the strongest shows I've ever seen.

Silent, I think it is FINE for you to isolate robbie and I because in this thread we were the only two to say something. But, there have been plenty of people in other threads who have gone on record as saying they don't think the show is very good.
Your citing standing ovations is meaningless, as the many threads about the meaninglessness of standing ovations will attest. And popularity is hardly a good measure of quality. One of the worst of the British musicals holds the longest-running record on Broadway. Does that make it good? By the way, one of the few points Wicked actually makes is that "popularity" is a very stupid measure for quality. But Wicked is very very popular. Laaaaa-la-lala-la laaaaaaaaaaa.

I agree. I just responded to your comments because they were on the page I was reading.
My adoration of the show has nothing to do with the fact that it's popular, by the way.
#38re: What if nobody had written Wicked?
Posted: 5/5/04 at 2:25pmPuhleeeez add me to the list (going on record again) as being a complete Wicked Hater - I think its great that it is bringing in new audiences - but its not a good musical by any stretch of the imagination.
#39re: What if nobody had written Wicked?
Posted: 5/5/04 at 2:27pmI actually loved the book and will be rereading it at some point in the near future. I also do not dislike Wiked the musical. I just find the cult following of any show amusing particularly when it generates so many threads regarding every minor aspect of the show. I realized I would be insulting Wicked fanatics when I did this but, I don't care. It's a joke, get over it.

People on this board wouldn't have anything to disagree about. Wait a minute...maybe not. :)

You aware nothing in this statement makes any sense, right?

I wasn't aware that Wicked had single handley loosened that Sondheim stronghold that was on Broadway. Not only that but, the writers of Bare and Ave Q would never have come up those shows or would never have gotten them produced if it weren't for Wicked.
Damn, that Wicked is one powerful show.
#44re: What if nobody had written Wicked?
Posted: 5/5/04 at 3:02pmLet's not forget about URINETOWN which was better than all of those!
#45re: What if nobody had written Wicked?
Posted: 5/5/04 at 3:05pmUrinetown was a great show. It certainly got the recognition it deserved but there wasn't strange little cult mentality around it. We have Rent Heads so why didn't ever see Urine Heads?
#46re: What if nobody had written Wicked?

URINETOWN, is one show I am bummed that I missed. I will not miss Bare!

#47re: What if nobody had written Wicked?
Posted: 5/5/04 at 3:06pmI think we didn't have Urine Heads just because of the sound of it. It's probably the same reason there wasn't a group for The Vagina Monologues...

Get it right, Orion, Bare and Avenue Q wouldn't exist without RENT, not Wicked.
Come on, man, know your history!
