Matt,
I agree. It's a shame more Rodgers & Hart shows aren't revived.
Why you just love to see a new production of A CONNECTICUT YANKEE?
("My Heart Stood Still", etc.)
1. Carousel
2. Sound of Music
3. King and I
4. South Pacific (Why oh why hasn't this returned to Broadway? Karen Ziemba anyone?)

The King and I for it's lush score and it's handling of many themes (men/women, father/son, cultural differences, class structure - and ultimately perhaps the most realistic love story.)
I feel like Billie Burke under pressure right now!
Oh, how could you ask such a difficult question Mary Ethel?
Karen Ziemba as Nellie Forbush...
Well. . .
I'm not sure the right vocal qualities are there.
Also, is her hair short enough for "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outta My Hair"?
SOUTH PACIFIC. The OBC was one of my favorite cast albums.
Aside from "Out Of My Dreams" I never warmed to OKLAHOMA! as a show, but then I've never been too wild about 'Americana' musicals which kind of dominated Broadway till HELLO, DOLLY! (But I do love BLOOMER GIRL). And although CAROUSEL has some gorgeous melodies (the Carousel waltz is one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written) , the faux-folksy Hammerstien lyrics REALLY grate on me.
Hi Master,
Do you have the NEW OBC CD of SOUTH PACIFIC with Martin singing "My Girl Back Home" AND "Lonliness of Evening"?
It's a MUST!!! :)
I love the upbeat songs in South Pacific, Carousel and I LOVE Annie's tunes in Oklahoma. I think Cinderella is adorable. Im not much of a fan of their plots/dialogue though. JUst the music is either beautiful or fun.
Corine, waht roles did you play?

I would have to say The Sound of Music. I grew up watching that movie. That and Mary Poppins were probably the first musicals I ever saw.
My Favorite Rodgers & Hammerstein musical is the original production of ANNIE GET YOUR GUN (1946).
They produced it. :)

I would have to say Oklahoma. It has always been my fsavorite since I was a child. I even had the honor of playing Aunt Eller in a production of it and I have never had so much fun as I did then.
So Grovers...
The show opened on you churning butter! :)

i can't stomach the sound of music (mucus to me) but i love SOUTH PACIFIC.
Hey Marquise Ol' Buddy,
SOUTH PACIFIC The Movie? Well...
Mitzi Gaynor as Nellie Forbush?
A dubbed Rozanno Brazzi as Emile de Becque?
The original Bloody Mary (Juanita Hall) DUBBED BY SOMEONE ELSE?
Josh Logan's use of "color"--underwater scenes in PURPLE?
One positive note: It did restore "My Girl Back Home" number which was cut prior to Broadway Opening.
hey! i love that movie! and the musical as a whole. mitzi gaynor was very good as nellie forbush. so what rosanno brazzi was dubbed, so was deborah kerr in the king and i and no one ever complains about that. the color filters were corny, but i could look beyond that and enjoy the scenery, the wonderful music, mitzi gaynor and the show's message above all. LIGHT YEARS AHEAD of that godawful TV remake.
Ooooooooooklahoma! And does Cinderella count?
Glenn Close as Nellie Forbush? DON'T get me started. . . :)
Of course CINDERELLA counts! She had to count to Midnight!!! :)

At the middle school, we had Cinderella (the character) in our shows 3 times in less than 2 years. First-we did "Remembering Richard Rogers" (2002) which was a show with scenes/songs written by Richard Rogers.. (BAAAAD show) then in the spring, (I know this has nothing to do with R.R.) we did Into the Woods (With Cinerella)(2003) and then the Fall 2003-we did a show called "Once Upon a Time" with songs and scenes from Cinderella and Peter Pan. So..we did parts from Cinderella twice..and it was really funny thanks to the Stepsisters in the 2003 version. They got to invent their own characters. One of them had a lisp and was..well, of course-stupid. The other one was just really dull and would like pick at her teeth and do other unlady-like things. So..I'm gonna have to go with Cinderella.
Carousel and then South Pacific
All of Them for different reasons, but especially:
STATE FAIR
ALLEGRO
ME&JULIET
PIPE DREAM
CINDERELLA (JULIE ANDREWS)
FLOWER DRUM SONG ORIGINAL 1958
Oscar Hammerstein was brilliant Librettist as well as Lyricist. The way he wrote/adapted all the stories was second to none.

Most definately Carousel. It is, in my opinion, the most moving show they have done. It has the best (or one of two) score they have ever done and it's the only book to their show that I didn't find either annoying or too long.
