it was the first show i was in so it has that special place in my heart South Pacific. Which needs to be revived on Broadway eventually, i dont think it ever has been revived has it?
SOUTH PACIFIC was revived by Lincoln Center in 1967 with:
Giorgio Tozzi (who dubbed Rozanno Brassi in film version)
Florence Henderson (mother from THE BRADY BUNCH!)
and
Juanita Hall (reprising her role as Bloody Mary)
Like all Lincoln Center Revivals, cast was recorded by RCA Victor but has been out of print for a LONG TIME.
I saw production and enjoyed it--but critics said it was a pale comparison to original Pinza/Martin production.
Show was also revived on West End (forget year) with Gemma Jones.
And of course, ABC made a three-hour telefilm recently with Glenn Close. (which I thought was paced WAY TOO SLOW.)
I especially hate the ending of Carousel. When Billy hits his daughter (showing that he never really changed at all) and she asks Julie if it's possible for someone to hit you and you don't even feel it. And Julie replies with a resounding "Yes!" Yeah, great message there. It's as if Billy's behavior is somehow excused and even celebrated in the end simply because, well, his INTENTIONS were good, at least. Sorry, but I just don't buy it.
The one song in Carousel I absolutely can't listen to is the Clambake number. The graphic descriptions of them tearing apart the food and gorging just makes me nauseous. LOL
Matt,
That is NOT how CAROUSEL ends. (That is how its source, LILIOM ends.)
Very wisely, R&H added additional scene where Billy gives confidence and self-esteem to daughter and Julie, all to the tune of "You'll Never Walk Alone."
Even Molnar, author of LILIOM, approved of the new ending and wept the first time he saw it.
I love Carousel. It was the first R&H musical theatre production (as opposed to film) I saw as a child (community theatre production). The revival in '94 was amazing. To this day, the ending never fails to bring a tear to my eye.
I also liked the revival of "The King & I"
I'm the first to say:
Cinderella
Just a fun musical and R&H best work!!!

The Sound of Music...I know, I know, but I used to watch this movie all the time when I was little, and would pretend I was Maria.
The Sound of Music. I used to watch it over and over and act out the scenes when I was younger.
Dickon etc. ,
CINDERELLA, hmmm?
Quite a UNIQUE choice and just in time for DVD Release!!!
"Well, things are happening EVERY DAY."
Did you know there was a West End version with Tommy Steele as King's confidante in 1958?
Definitely The Sound of Music.
Sound of music, no question. Favorite movie since i've been about 4 so i'm tied to that one.
Oklahoma!
"We know we belong to the land.
And the land we belong to is grand."
"Oh what a beautiful morning.
Oh what a beautiful day.
I've got a beautiful feeling,
Everything's going my way."

THE KING AND I.
Used to be Sound of Music, but then I noticed it had too many similarities with The King... which, of these two, was made first.
Rentaholic,
Sure I know Joe... he was third cowhand from the left, correct? :)

Mary_Ethel, you must of been the fourth farmer's daughter from the right! I had my eye on you...
Rentaholic,
It's not THAT implausible. Mary Martin was R&H's first choice for Laurey; but she decided to go with that immortal classic DANCING IN THE STREETS (which closed out of town.)
On stage Oklahoma, on film The Sound of Music (although I like the film version of Oklahoma). And lately have been really enjoying Cinderella (5 year old daughter). I loooved the 60's version and am thilled that PBS will be showing the Julie Andrews version this fall.
'Carousel' is a gorgeous show, but my favorite is probably 'The Sound of Music'. It's the one I grew up on. 'The King & I' is right behind. Was never a huge 'South Pacific', and I think that 'Oklahoma' is boring as h*ll.

My R&H exposure is somewhat limited (HS productions of Sound of Music and Cinderella, and a regional production of Carousel), but I'm not the biggest fans of their work. I mean, I respect them for their brilliance, but I just find their shows to be very slow moving. Maybe its just me...
Anyhoo, overall, I'd have to say I liked everything about Carousel the best. The story line was the most interesting, the songs were touching, the staging of the production was amazing, everything was great (except the pace lol). I really didnt think I liked the show while I was seeing it, but the finale blew me away. It was at that point when I realized it was a great work. Just a little on the boring side lol.
Carousel!!!!!!!!! Hands down!!!!!!! The first movie musical I saw when I was like 8 was Oklahoma and I fell in love with Shirley Jones so I went out and got Carousel and that was the end of everything for me!
I would have to say King and I is a somewhat close second, it has those amazing instrumental numbers (march of the royal children, shall we dance, aghhhhhhh) And then Oklahoma and South Pacific coming in a close third. I love them all really, but Carousel really stands out as my favorite!!!!!!!!!!!
CAROUSEL by a landslide. I'm more of a Rodgers & Hart fan personally.
