I've grown accustomed to most of the other songs; I've even grown to liking most of them very much. La Vie Boheme in total, and Rent in parts, just sound too polished. Sounding polished kind of defeats the story doesn't it? They are supposed to be on the fringes of society, they aren't sounding like it exactly. I'm not digging the rearrangment of speaking parts, I don't see the reason. Really, why isn't Collins the one talking about Mimi and the sounds of iced tea being stirred. What was wrong with that?
Okay, now that that is out my system, I am liking the CD now, for the most part and totally support the project(s). Thoughts?
not sure, but the instrumentation of "Over The Moon" sounds like the Blue Man Group.

Good point - Over The Moon does sound a bit like Blue Man Group!
I'm getting used to the new sound and I'm liking it - it's just different. The OBCR definitely sounds like, well, an OBCR. The soundtrack sounds like errrmm....a movie soundtrack. So I think I'll need to hear the songs in context (in the movie) to see how everything fits (speaking parts, etc.).
I am digging the new version of Today 4U - all techno, it's great. And I love the new sound on Collins' songs (Santa Fe, I'll Cover You). Jesse's voice is so powerful.

Jesse rocks my world! Ok, continue on w/ critiques!
yea i dont get why they changed the whole order of the impromptu salon part and who says who. It bothered me the first time I heard it because I was singing along and then came to that part and was like --huh?!?. I don't understand why they changed little parts like that.
i'm personally loving the way that the opening piano part before mark's solo verse starts slow and gets progressively faster as opposed to staying one tempo like on stage

I don't understand why they switched the parts either. I always thought it was kind of part of Mark's character in being the one who says the part about Maureen. I'm getting used to it though.
It's obvious to me that they changed who sang what so that Jesse could say, "Which she ain't never studied!" I LOVE that...lol.

I never liked the original "over the moon", so I definately don't like this one
I love the movie version of Over the Moon. Mostly the loud random moo at the ends makes me fall over laughing. The OBCR mooing didn't seem quite up to par.
Does it bother anyone else that they changed Angel's "feeling, power" to "power, feeling"? I know, it's such a small, far from vital detail, but it kind of drives me crazy. I mean, why change it?
EDIT. BAHAHA musical_nerd the last random moo is amazing
Even the way Idina moos in this version annoys the piss out of me. Could be because I was listening to it while stuck on the GW, but I don't think so. The fun that I grew to love in the OCR is gone.
Yeah Idina's moo bothers me a little but then when I got to the end I was like "who cares? THAT WAS THE BEST ENDING ever."
I also crack up at the way Adam Pascal says candy bar wrapper in Light My Candle. He just says it so squished together... I dunno.
MOO!
Uh, Adam's,"I mean you do, have a nice, *squeak* squeak* I mean.." OWNS MY SOUL. So. Cute.Jesse does sound absolutely phenomenal, random moo is wonderous. Idina's just really breathy on OTM ... I think that's my biggest problem. But ... again, random moo is amahzing.
First of all, let's not forget that Over The Moon will most likly be different in the movie.
But all in all, I really enjoy this CD. The way I've described it, however, is that it is a little "processed" compared to the original. It's been slightly "de-musicalized" and sounds a little more like somthing you'd hear on the radio.
But I'd like to compliment the actors (and the direction for that matter) because most of the spoken lines sound much more real and like there is real emotion behind them and not just words inbetween lyrics.

The thing that's driving me nuts is the instrumentals in "Rent" where it's the phone conversations between Mark and Maureen and Joanne and Maureen. I always go to sing them and they aren't there! No to mention no more "We light candles!" what's up with that? I loved that! Other than that, I think the soundtrack is cool. I kind of miss the lines that are sung in Life Support as well like "excuse me paul, I'm having a problem with this. This credo..(ect)"
AlmostXFamous, I agree! The squeak makes me smile EVERY time I hear it

I also miss those parts in Life Support... it makes me sad. But I must say, I LOVE the new La Vie Boheme, its so fun to listen to. I must say I enjoy listening to the soundtrack a little more, if only because there is so much more energy. There are little things that they changed that just KILL me but I'm sure I'll get used to it. My friend and I were discussing the soundtrack and our likes and dislikes. My dislikes (LMC and OTM) were some of his likes and my likes (Tango: Maureen and Today 4 U) were some of of his dislikes. I guess it just depends on how you felt about it to begin with...
I think I'm not going to listen to the soundtrack anymore until I've seen the movie. I think I burned myself out on POTO a bit before I saw the movie by listening to the st.

On "Goodbye Love" I was singing along for the fist time and suddenly it turned into a harmony in the middle of the song....Anyone else have this experience?

The positive side:
--I agree Act4Ever... the speaking parts of the songs have a lot more emotion behind them, I noticed it in Adam the most.
--I prefer this seasons of love to the OBR version
--Tracie Thoms: I love the differences in Goodbye Roger & every song she is in. In my opinion, a major improvement
The negative side:
--instrumental parts in "Rent" where there was originally dialouge.
--Just the drums in general. I didn't particarly like it in TMOLM either.
--Changing of the order/dialogue

The order of the dialogue in "La Vie Boheme" was probably changed because the reason why they're celebrating is Maureen's show. It gives Maureen a little more time in the spotlight rather than just her intro thrown into the mix.
Other dialogue omissions make sense to me. Mark wouldn't say, "We light candles" to Roger, would he? It makes sense that he says it in the show because he's speaking to the audience. Remember, there's generally no breaking of the fourth wall in film.
Regarding "Life Support," while I love the entire song in the show (especially Mark's little awkward moment!), it's much more effective to have just Gordon's last part sung. And also, it's only a minute long in the show. Perhaps they extended the scene in the movie. Remember, Angel takes off his wig. There would be no time in there to take it off if the whole scene were just the song.
I can't remember whatever else people are itched about. But to me, it all makes sense for the movie. It's an adaptation of a stage musical, not a film directly lifted from the show. Changes have to be made in order for it to make sense in a new medium.

I LOVED the soundtrack, I also missed the cut bits, I like La Vie Boheme and I don't like the new Today 4 U. I prefer the OBCR's energy and beat on this song. Also there are some parts that I felt were more "polished" compared to the raw energy of the OBCR. Oh and I never liked "Over the Moon" either. It was the only song I LOVED in the theater but always skipped on the CD !
Yeah, "Over the Moon" has to be watched and experienced, not listened to.

i love, LOOOVE the new "TANGO: MAUREEN"
tracie is amazing. i LOVE HER. i mean, i'm okay with rosario. but, i believe that traci was a GREAT find.
