Spongebob was the most fun I've had in a theatre. Maybe ever. I saw a preview where it seemed like mostly stoned mid-twenty year olds (like myself) and you would have thought it was a rock concert. Every joke landed perfectly, there was cheering and applause that was thunderous, and I'm Not A Loser for a mid show standing ovation.
But I recognize that the stigma it had on it before it ever came in and that it's been playing at around 50% of it's box office potential. I have a feeling it will close in September and that it will do splendidly on tour.
I wish nothing but the absolute best for this show, it's genius director, and it's dynamite cast! Go get a $30 rush ticket if you haven't seen the show, sit back, relax, smoke a little, and HAVE FUN!!!
I expect this to close in September, which is sad, but it can't fill the seats.

Just wondering, if they were to stay open and move theatres, how would that work? Obviously they would "close" momentarily, but for how long?
It will not win Best Musical and the 3 or 4 TONYS it wins won't help the box office so it will play out the summer and close o/a Labor Day. A move is too costly for this production.
After seeing it today I’d hope that the volcano erupts and buries it in steaming lava.

One could argue it’s amazing it’s lasted as long as it has.
A production worker said they were told Nickelodeon pulled out funding and will close. Date uncertain.
Loved the show; hated the rude, disturbing audience of kids talking, crying, bored after 20 mins, parents and kids treating the theater like a playground, endless trips to bathrooms, etc. They should've made an explicit language version for adults only night and turned it into a Rocky Horror Pic show cult classic.. The NYTimes critic was right: the best way to enjoy the TOLERATE the show is with weed.
So does that mean Ham will move to it following renovations?

It's sad the show won't last long. But maybe we will get a national tour and/or a filmed performance.
I can't imagine that, after tonight, they'll last too much longer.

I can’t imagine that Nickelodeon thought SS would win best new musical tonight which was really its only hope of turning things around. It is getting brand advertising out of being on Broadway and Times Square ads. Whether that’s enough for Nickelodeon to keep it running until September is anyone’s guess. I suppose it depends on what Nickelodeon’s endgame is. National tour? Amusement park theme show? Just expanding its tv show reach?
I agree, but I think they thought they'd receive more than Best Set. Just thinking plans still could've shifted after tonight, but I know that Nickelodeon is a different beast than other producers.
this show is done by Labor Day.

It was always going to close in that theatre anyways.

Now that the elititists have taken firm control of the industry again, SpongeBob, all of its cast and crew, and all of its fans, will be summarily executed. The Palace will remain open during construction solely to showcase the torture and executions of all who have different opinions and tastes from the Broadway elite. Disney will allow this to happen because THEY want to be the sole Corporate Overlord in charge of Broadway, and will accept this huge pushback against Viacom, while sending in armed guards (wearing mickey ears over their helmets, of course) to protect the cast, crew, and fans of Frozen, while they bide their time and consult with ways to continue their front in the next phase of the War.
(Disclaimer just in case: the above post is intended to be satire. Do not take it seriously.)
Agree that the awards were too slanted. Frozen was frozen out. Is Disney going to close that too?

It wouldn't surprise me- seems like, despite brand recognition, this show is going to go the same way as Tarzan and Little Mermaid- it will coast for a little bit on the sole fact that it's Frozen, and eventually they'll shut it down. With lukewarm reviews, general disinterest from most of the ticket-buying community (namely, those without children,) and no major awards to speak of, this one seems like it''l be out sooner rather than later.

I think families will decide on Harry Potter and Cursed Child over Frozen. If those money cannot that reviews did not help. The name recognition and Tony Awards will. I know some are hardcore fans . But if you have a family of 'mixed preferences' Harry Potter wins. It will last a decade. While Frozen will freeze by NYE leaving the theatre for Moulin Rouge or Hadlestown !

Brilliant as it is, and it is brilliant, every ticket you buy for Harry Potter you have to buy twice over in order to see both parts, and therefore the whole story, making it literally twice as expensive to the individual audience member, or 'family', therefore it is is therefore not simple straight choice between it and Frozen, which looking at the grosses, is doing just fine.

That's not necessarily the case. HP is a pricey ticket (and this is coming from someone who's purchased premium Ham seats several times), especially if you're purchasing for a family (3 or 3+ people). Frozen is easier to access and it's a musical. Children and teenagers would much rather see a musical than a play.
I think a family would like to choose Harry Potter over the others however that’s a pricey theater ticket. Yes frozen tickets can be a bit expensive (especially when you factor in buying for a family) but Harry Potter is even more expensive because you have to purchase your tickets separately for each performance.
