re: What is the best show of all time?

In my opinion the shows that truly define Broadway:

Pal Joey
Oklahoma!
Annie Get Your Gun
Carousel
South Pacific
Guys and Dolls
The King and I
Wonderful Town
The Pajama Game
My Fair Lady
The Music Man
How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying
Hair!
Funny Girl
Hello, Dolly
The Wiz
Dreamgirls
Little Shop of Horrors
Les Miserables
Phantom
Cats
Aida
Wicked
Avenue Q

I know its a lot, but I think those are the best and will always be remembered

Derek2 --

In terms of "defining" the artform.....

No Showboat? A Chorus Line? Fiddler? Man of La Mancha? West Side Story? ANY SOndheim???????

BUT

you include Wonderful Town? Funny Girl? Pajama Game? Aida???

And the list purports to be of the shows that DEFINED Broadway?

Uh, OK.....

re: What is the best show of all time?

Derek and I will be producing the best show of all time as our first venture together as Broadway producers... re: What is the best show of all time?

re: What is the best show of all time?

I think Little Shop should be reserved for a "Shows that define Off-Broadway" list, seeing as it has been on Broadway once, and did quite poorly.

re: What is the best show of all time?

Guys, this isn't asking for your FAVORITE shows, but the *best show*

My pick will either have to be ACL or the The Fantasticks. I'm not too good at picking out this stuff.

re: What is the best show of all time?

Kid! They're not asking for every show that's been on Broadway, they're asking for the best SHOW (notice the absence of an S on the end).

re: What is the best show of all time?

It's between A Chorus Line, Rent, and Sweeney Todd. All three have great drama, humor, writing, music, books, set, meaning, lyrics, and message.

re: What is the best show of all time?

I know I know. But there isnt just one. The ones I mentioned (in my opinion) are the best written and the ones that will always be remembered. I mean there have been thousands of shows on broadway, I dont think I named every one lol :)

re: What is the best show of all time?

Well, you have to omit The Fantasticks, since it's never played Broadway.

And like the show or not, Showboat HAS to be at the top of the list since it is probably the single most influencial piece of musical theatre ever written -- it influenced the next two generations of shows and was the first musical to use the artform to deal with serious, important issues (i.e. race). Without Showboat, there wouldn't have been Porgy and Bess, Pal Joey, Oklahoma, Carousel et al. Hammerstein expanded the possiblities of the musical and gave the next 50 years of composers and book writers the courage and the license to experiment with any kind of subject matter they felt passionate about.

re: What is the best show of all time?

Is it specified whether the show should be Broadway or Off-Broadway? I don't think that the author of the thread stated which one...

re: What is the best show of all time?

It depends on what cast recording I'm killing at the moment. Does anyeone else go through the same thing where you just listen to the CD over and over and over again for like weeks on end. I've been listening to Assassins (got it on Friday night) nonstop since then. Its the best!

How true Margo. Your right. I should have included it. It is a great show and it never seems to get old

re: What is the best show of all time?

I don't have one favorite.
It is impossible. I have a list of 100 shows I adore.
Avenue Q, is at the top of a very long list.
I loved Millie damn it. I did and I miss it.
I also love Caroline Or Change, Violet, Cabaret, Urinetown,
South Pacific, The Sound Of Music, Pippin and A Chorus Line.

re: What is the best show of all time?

Sorry, I thought someone specified "Broadway" (though I personally wouldn't include "The Fanstasticks" on a "Best" list, myself).

Every week when this question is asked, I always say the same thing.

GYPSY
"Noah, someday we'll talk again. But there's things we'll never say. That sorrow deep inside you. It inside me, too. And it never go away. You be okay. You'll learn how to lose things..."

Hair and Cabaret may round out the top 10...hard call

p.s. can some people make NO distinction b/w their favorite and the best??

re: What is the best show of all time?

LeoMax,

Yes, we do -- I'm getting flashbacks. You forgot "Oklahoma" -- generally credited as the first fully-integrated musical and second in influence only to "Showboat." Gotta be on any "Best" list.
