What kinds of "mature themes" in SPRING AWAKENING?

Watching the nobodies on broadway.com they kept mentioning the "uncomfortable" topics covered and how there were graphic scenes performed on stage. Can anyone be a little more specific as to what these themes/specific scenes were?

There's a fairly explicit sex scene with a little bit of nudity. There's some on stage violence (possibly with hints of S&M), one character commits suicide, one of the boys masturbates on stage, there's a scene about domestic violence, etc.

Is the masturbation scene actually done in nude?

I haven't seen how it is done in the musical but in an excellent production of the original play the boys circle jerk scene was done with themin their underwear only. Each boy had a mini flashlight in his briefs and they would move that back and forth simulating the act. As each boy finished they would switch the light off. Very effective way of showing without actually doing the act on stage. (I have heard of some college productions where the boys do actually do it. I guess it depends how comfortable the actors are with it and what they think the audience will accept. I have much more of a problem with violence than with anything sexual.)

Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!

I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

The nudity is a bare breast as well as groff's butt both in the sex scene (which is actually played twice in the show). As far as I was concerned none of the "mature" scenes in the show were anything but tasteful. Mostly, I just felt that for such a young cast it was an extremely brave piece of work.

I saw the show with my mother and aunt (I'm 21), both of whom are very conservative and they loved it. I think seeing it with a parent is a really valuable experience, actually.

Tobias, don't let the mention of the circle jerk scare you off. This production has been "mainstreamed" for a Broadway audience and is really not that bad aside from the flash of breast and bum and the simulated self gratification under a nightshirt (which is actually a funny scene). Like the NY Times said, (paraphrased) "it's totally classy."
