What do I expect? Why, exactly and precisely this!
Someone mentions Drowsy, you make high-handed comments about how much it stank, s&d2 chimes in with a smart 'what he said', I take a swipe at those who hate something I like, you slap back, and any attempt at humour on my part is misconstrued. Personally I enjoy the ritual - especially nice for this weekend to resurrect an old feud. The addition of bob8 has spiced things up nicely. Happy Easter.

I saw it both in New York just after opening and again in London. London's production was pretty close to the NYC quality with the exception of the star performance by Sutton Foster -- sorry, but the London lead didn't come close.

One point that hasn't been made is that during the run in London, every day for 10 days I was in line at TKTS. It was surrounded by people in Chaperone T-shirts passing out info and talking up the show. Was that a good thing? I'm not sure. Over and over again I heard people say "it must be dreadful. I've never seen such a desperate attempt to drum up business."
Sometimes publicity attempts backfire.

Perhaps the team at TKTS London should have moved about to other areas. I still have to say I like the show. Certainly one of the better musicals to emerge from Broadway in recent years.

What smart comment did i make? is it because i don't think Drowsy was that good, lets be honest that's the only reason your having a go, if you are obsessed with the show fine but don't go knocking me because i didn't think it was that great, its not like im the only one.
I would have loved for it to run as i know it had many fans, but i personally did not think it was anything to write home about.

Oh and the stolen dvd remark...i totally paid for them lol
Namo i love u but we get it already....you don't like Madonna

Apart from the obvious low box office, the root of that has to be poor producing. Without naming names, the same, not particularly skilled, producer was behind DS, DSS and is one of the several producers messing up Spring Awakening at the moment.

When you know just how much Elaine P was being paid a week, it ain't hard to see that the people at the helm weren't that savvy.

sorry to barge in and completely thread jack but what's going wrong with spring awakening? i saw it the other day and loved it! it's an amazing show, with such a good--and rather attractive :) --cast. it'd be a shame if it didn't get a healthy run

Well, song&dance, that was my point. We all react like Pavlov's dogs in exactly the same way we always have to any mention of Drowsy. I find this amusing and was participating in my usual fashion as an ironic re-enactment of the last 2+ years of exchanged bile on the subject. I could frankly give a rat's ass what anyone thinks, but do get annoyed at the "it stank" expression of criticism. I certainly don't expect Mama69, the grand dame of the West End board to be entertained - and in fact would be horrified if she found me amusing in any way - obviously our senses of humour do not mesh. But I mean no harm in any way - only having a bit of sport.
I can only imagine what you mean by paying for dvds - I only hope it was as salaciously entertaining as my mental picture as no one on any creative team profits from the spoils of stolen performance. note to self - god, don't forget to add re: What really killed Drowsy in London?

I adored Drowsy, and I reckon the poster campaign had a lot do with it falling down the sh*tter. Who wants to see a show promoted with pictures of Elaine Paige as Elaine Paige with a cocktail in her hand. Looking at the posters on the tube, you'd reckon it was some kind of Elaine Paige review with a whole load of people in 1920's garb (who were, incidentally, the Broadway cast). If the marketing had been true to the production and much less focus on that toothy tit Paige (the character wasn't even the lead anyway) and it coulad have fared a bit better. I miss it... I loved Summer Strallen in it.

What I don't understand is how Drowsy failed and Avenue Q suceeded, when they both had dullish scores, and books that although funny in Act I none-the-less wore thin in Act II.

I don't think anything could have saved Drowsy really as there simply isn't the same volume of audience for it in London as there is in NY. I mean if anyone were to ask me where to find sad gay men obsessed with musicals I wouldn't even know where to start looking.

And, although I didn't see Sutton to compare her to, I thought Summer was hilarious, particularly in I Don't Want To Show Off. How did she manage to hold that high note whilst drinking the glass of water? I guess it mustn't have been real water or something.

^Click track :)

I know Summer definitely used one because i noticed one of the notes being sustained for her. Was the only time i've ever actually noticed one.

SADM2: The DVD you're referring to of London is a rehearsal, filmed by the dance captain, which was leaked. Hence why it was a quiet audience haha. Just before Show Off, the show is stopped by a cast member who cannot get tap shoes off on time, and you notice him come onstage and gesture this to somebody in the audience haha.
What a great memento, however, I love watching it!

And re: use of click track. The DVD mentioned gives an example of when it was used, which can be heard very clearly here:

Once again, it shows that everyone has different tastes and opinions. I LOVED every single second of Avenue Q and I certainly did not feel its appeal and effectiveness wore off as the show went on. It was, for me at least, in total contrast to Drowsy. It was genuinely witty rather than silly, highly innovative, had multi-layered sub-text in the book and lyrics and the music was bright, energetic and absorbing as opposed to dull and predictable. It is no surprise to me that Avenue Q has been a huge success.

also Avenue Q actually has quite a lot of content that people can relate to, and much of the humour and situations we can all recognise from day to day life.

re: What really killed Drowsy in London?

'Avenue Q' entertained, 'Drowsy' didn't.
The length of each s hows runs speaks volumes.

Saw Drowsy on Broadway and the US tour. Loved it both times. Burnstein's Adolfo was genius and he very nearly stole the show. And I preferred Opel to Leavel in the title role.
