As a long time member both on this board, and attending theatre in New York, I am curious what’s up with this current Broadway season... not only has it been a really weak season in terms of what’s currently playing, but also for what’s been announced... what I’m specifically puzzled about is why are there so many vacant theatres with no current tenants announced, and why do all these shows appear to be broadway bound, but have yet to announce their transfer? Rarely are there this many open theatres with nothing confirmed for the fall/spring?
Marquis: empty since E2M, nothing confirmed for fall/spring...
Winter Garden: nothing confirmed after SoR closes up in January...
Lyceum: nothing confirmed after PTGW closes up in January...
Imperial: nothing confirmed after Carousel closes up in a few weeks...
Walter Kerr: nothing confirmed after Springsteen ends his run in January...
And this list doesn’t even begin to include likely vacant theatres in the near future: Circle in the Square, Lunt-Fontanne, The Hudson, The Al Hirschfield, The Nederlander, The Cort, The Belasco, and possibly The Broadway...
I know that these shows are Broadway Bound... but none have confirmed yet:
Moulin Rouge, Dreamgirls, The Secret Garden, Ain’t Too Proud To Beg, Tootsie, Crazy For You, Jagged Little Pill, Love Never Dies, Hadestown, Beatlejuice, Dave, Girl From The North Country, Tina: Tina Turner Musical...
Less Likely: Sweet Charity (Sutton Foster), The Minutes, Roman Holiday, The Honeymooners, 42nd Street (London Transfer), Bat Out Of Hell, Company (London Transfer), The Bodyguard Musical, & The Woman in White (London Transfer),
