I saw this show recently over spring break, and I was just curious as to what they used as hairspray. At first I thought it was actual hairspray and wondered how they weren't gagging, but then I looked closer and saw it was like smoke, kind of like dry ice, and not hairspray. Just curious. Anyone know?

It could be water, spritzing out like that because of the pressurized can. I am not completely sure, but I think it is water.

...What happened next, was stranger still, a woman breathless and afraid, appeared out of the night, completely dressed in white. She had a secret she would tell, of one who had mistreated her. Her face and frightened gaze, my mind cannot erase...But then she ran from view. She looked so much like you...

Its actually a product that basically is "haze"..Like from a fog machine. Very safe for the actors.

I was wondering about this too. Interesting.

whatever it is...when Tracy sprays her hair going into the detention scene....when she's all done..there's a visible wet spot and drips all over her wig from the "hairspray"...lol

The product they use is available to EVERYONE at most online halloween or party supply stores. It is commonly called "Fog In a Can." It's just a party effect that makes a more portable and often more fun alternative to a fog machine. (I own a can of the stuff they use in the show, and the "Ultra Clutch" Label is semi-transparant up close, so you can see the label of the original can underneath.)

i initially thought it was really hairspray too (good morning baltimore on the today show) and i remember saying "that must be the stickiest stage on broadway by the end of the night" but fog makes more sense

So after the entire world is destroyed by nukes, all that's left will be the fake hairspray?

Oh, and Twinkies.
