Fan: Listening to their cast recordings all day and occasionally singing along. Going to their shows and waiting at the stage door afterward for an autograph?picture, commenting on how you admire their work.
Stalker: Listening to their songs while holding a photo of them while singing the duet part with them, and saying "i love you", and go to sleep with the photo. Going to every show with them around the country (if they are on tour) or seeing their show multiple times, and even when you dont see the show, waiting outside for them every night just to get a glimpse of them, and/or talk to them.
There's a fine fine line
Fan-knows their work, and admires them
--------------------------------------
stalker- thinks they know them, and that the star shares the same compassion, even though they met you once after a show for like a whole 30 seconds!
taking any sort of garbage at all borders on weird and strange (unless it's something SUPER SWEET read: "oops I tore my costume...guess I'll throw it out". then I MIGHT consider dumpster diving...MAYBE)
yeah but fake eyelashes, come on those are trash. But if oh, say, Norbert threw out an old prop like a hat or something, behind drs, id be there, with a bunch of others.
indeed.....but I'd have to think about it even then...I'd be trampled by a bunch of crazies...

sending a christmas card to an actor would be o.k if they were actually a friend or something.... otherwise it's a crazed fan that knows where you live! I think i'd move or get CCTV or something!
It's true that there's a very fine lien between the two.
ENTHUSIASTIC FAN: Visits the stage door after their shows to compliment the actor.
STALKER: Visits the stage door after their shows to compliment the actor, then followes them home.
I agree completely on the christmas card statement, goggles....well said.
I support all of the "Wicked" fans sending Idina Christmas and Easter cards. Send her some coupons for Burger King come Passover, as well.
Oh i think sending people mail at their home is a little sketch. Especially for more than one holiday, id be a little freaked out if it didnt even know the person.

The celebrity to whom I send Christmas cards is someone who was kind enough to send me a lovely condolence note when my father died (He was in show business - his obituary appeared in VARIETY). The note was on her personalized stationery with her home address. I really don't think she feels threatened by an annual Christmas card.
She always invites me back to her dressing room when I come to see her in a show. She introduces me to people as "my friend Jon", although I would never dare to tell people she's my "friend". She's a fellow theatre professional who's work I admire and who has been quite gracious to me.
I sent her a "Congratulations" card when she won a Tony Award. Is that out of line?

It makes me so, so sad when perfectly good sarcasm is lost on people.

A lot of people are posting stalkerish things that very few people would do, but said people might still be a bit freaky. You don't have to follow them home in order to reach 'creepy'.
Yeah, I definately wasnt aware people actually confess their love to their fav star, wouldnt they be a little more discreet than that? "Um yes, patrick wilson, i want to make sweet sweet poonananny to you right here, right now, and have your babies". yeah right. if i saw patrick wilson (and was stalkerly in love with him) this is exactly what i'd say:
"{drool} Hi Patrick wilson"
"yes, can i sign that for you?"
"You're Patrick Wilson"
"Yes {beep} get this chick the hell out of here"
"Mom, I met patrick wilson! do you think he knows i like him."
I wouldnt be able to declare my eternal devotion to him.
But then again, I'm not stalkerly in love with any one.
Except Patrick wilson. Jk

Sending a Christmas card is not creepy....provided you send it to the theater or maybe an agent or some official site, knowing the home address is a little much.
With Lennon the musical coming to Broadway as a reminder, all kidding aside, celebrity stalking must truly be frightening to the Broadway actor...especially with the proximity involved in live theater. You don't see too many Broadway stars with security entourages either. In the post Rebecca Schaeffer age, I do sympathize for the insecurity these people must feel. Yes, I know there is a price you mustpay for celebrity but it needn't be tragic.
"Goes to the airport in hopes of catching a glimpse of a performer"
that's a little over enthusiastic, especially if you've learned the flight.
I've seen a few performers give the "I love you too" response which only encourages some of the behavior. There are some people that just love the attention, on both sides of the barricade.

The Stalker Anthem
Every breath you take
Every move you make
Every bond you break
Every step you take
I’ll be watching you
Every single day
Every word you say
Every game you play
Every night you stay
I’ll be watching you
Oh, can’t you see
You belong to me
How my poor heart aches
With every step you take
Every move you make
Every vow you break
Every smile you fake
Every claim you stake
I’ll be watching you
Since you’ve gone I been lost without a trace
I dream at night I can only see your face
I look around but it’s you I can’t replace
I feel so cold and I long for your embrace
I keep crying baby, baby, please...
Oh, can’t you see
You belong to me
How my poor heart aches
With every breath you take
Every move you make
Every vow you break
Every smile you fake
Every claim you stake
I’ll be watching you
Every move you make
Every step you take
I’ll be watching you
I’ll be watching you
I’ll be watching you
I’ll be watching you
I’ll be watching you...

Generally speaking, I'd say if your favorite actor knows *your* name then you might be bordering on over obsessive, or even creepy. Of course there are exceptions to this (I was a fan of this one show which had a lot of free promotional events - question/answer sessions and the like. I went to them. I also showed up at stage door of said show three times, once for my own autographs, twice because I was with friends who wanted autographs. One of the actresses did learn my name. I also had neon pink hair at the time though, which I think made me very noticable no matter what I did).
I don't think giving an actor a small gift at the stage door, for example a piece of fan art, is creepy. I think giving them expensive gifts, or giving them gifts more than once can be creepy.

Someone said that this post was too long on this topic because it was over 2 pages. If that was a criteria for cutting off a post on BWW, we'd have a lot less trouble plowing through all the posts :)
In the meantime, let me just say that there are actors who try to be solicitous of their dedicated fans and will take the time to say hello, sign an autograph and maybe even remember their names if they've met them a few times before. That doesn't give a fan the right to cross the line and presume the actors wants to take them home and eat them for lunch.
People need to recognize when an actor has extended themselves and tried to be nice and not take advantage...that's why young actors end up going underground and becoming less accessible as they get older (because all it takes is one really bad experience and they learn that giving out your email address or trying to be friendly can sometimes get you into way more trouble than you ever imagined)

I think inappropriate includes those who go to the stage door after NOT having seen the show...
