My friend goes to an all-girls Jewish school, and their school musical this year is Wicked. I know that highly illegal, but do people actually report things like that or leave them be?
I'm sure if you reported those fools trying to do that - to the Wicked producers somehow. They would be in deep sh*t, and rightfully so!
You should report it.
actually.....maybe first talk to the Principal of the school, explain that they could be sued, which would cost the school a ton of money......
I doubt anyone would want that to happen.
The school is stealing, and that is wrong.
People do report these things and the places putting on the productions get fined. It's literally stealing the show.
You're all jumping to conclusions. Think about it... an ALL GIRL production? How are they going to do BOQ and FIYERO seriously? If this school is anything like the one I went to for middle school their production is probably far from what you imagine a school production to be. And I'm not trying to insult the school, if it truly is attempting to put on a full scale show than that is obviously wrong. I don't know...I went to one of these school and I just can't see it being as serious as you all are making it out to be.
No, popular, it's not right ever. The genders of the actors doesn't matter. The production levels don't. They do not have the rights to do this.
didn't some theater camp do an illegal production of Carrie a few years ago? Stagedoor Manor?
Well I never said it was right. Obviously if it's illegal it's wrong. I guess I'm just questioning what "putting on WICKED" means exactly when coming out of the mouth of a student of a school like this. I think the person who started this thread should just get the facts straight on that and see if they have the right to do what it is they are doing first before jumping to conclusions.
Well, it's sort of an assumption since it's not a theater school, and I don't go there, some of my friends do.
fair point, popular. :)
I take offense as a former high school student who did a lot of car washes and bake sales to raise the money to pay the royalties on the shows we did. I would inform the principal. The teacher/director would know what they are doing is illegal, the principal may not.
Or you could just post the name of the school and I am sure someone on here would be happy to call for you...lol.
Are the students sure it will be the production, or is it just wishful thinking on the girls' parts?
Yes, and once again I'm sorry if this comes off as insulting to the school but the all girls Jewish schools I'm familiar with you didn't even see men in the audience because the more religious Jews hold the womans voice as sacred and they aren't allowed to hear a woman sing unless it's their wife's voice.
The school really is doing Wicked. I was told my multiple people. Auditions are this week. My friend wants Boq.
Be nice. Don't tell anybody.

What would you do if you saw someone stealing froma store? Beating their child? It is highly illegal. Not to mention ethically a terrible example to be set for the kids... so what if you cant get it the right way.. just take it.. it is only a crime if someone catches you.. right?
Find out which company holds the rights and let them know. If they wanted to do a one night concert entitled "Songs from Wicked", that would be no big deal. but a full out production? Turn em in.
If they know it is illegal after you tell them, then it is really wrong and not just a mistake.
If you don't know the specific company that owns the royalties,
go to www.stephenschwartz.com and e-mail Michael Cole

Yup...No orchestra, just a piano. Laughably bad...

I was in a production of INHERIT THE WIND at a local theater. We had no idea that it was an illegal production. Although eventually we realized that the photocopied scripts might have been a hint.
The idiot producers invited The New York Times to review the production and the day after the review was published we went to the theater to find police blocking the entrance. The show was closed down until the producers paid all the royalties--including the purchase of scripts (which were never used).

As a writer and friend of many artists I think it is wrong. Yes a lot of times the artists can sort of care less especially if it is a small school, but they still think it is wrong. I think you should definitly say something. I truly am sick of no it all teachers doing what ever they want. ANd to do a show like WICKED you are obviously doing it for some recongnition, its not like you didn't pay the royalties to Harvey.
LOL! Where do we buy tickets? This will be CLASSIC!! Did they book the crane yet to get little Elphie into the air to defy gravity? At least the police wont get her - she'll be up too high, LOL!!!
I dunno, I kinda disagree with turning them in just because of my views on royalties and high school shows anywyay. I think it's kind of dumb to make a high school pay royalties for a production. It's not like a high school production is competing with the Broadway show, it'll run three or four nights and close; not to mention the quality is no where near the same (in most high schools). Especially with the lack of support for the theatre in most schools, why should there be one more place for the budget to be cut back (sending in royalties)? I dunno... somehow I can't imagine a jewish, all-girl school competing with a broadway show... I say let them do it.
um, sorry if this is totally off topic, but i just sorta don't see what the fact that the school is Jewish has to do with anything. the all girls part makes sense, but Jewish people are perfectly capable of putting out quality theatre, so if maybe people could stop referencing that aspect of the school, that'd be great.
that being said, i agree that maybe high schools shouldn't have to pay royalties, but since they do, any school putting on an illegal production is wrong, because it's illegal.
