Throughout all of Broadway history? Either a great show that overall got bad reviews, or vice-versa?
Almost every Sondheim show has received bad reviews... Follies, Sweeney, Overtures--especially Sunday--only one critic (Rich) almost liked it.

More recently, I found it interesting that Caroline, Or Change received mostly rave reviews from the critics in London, LA, San Francisco, and DC, but got a decidedly lukewarm reception from the New York critics (except, again, for Frank Rich -- and a couple of others -- who raved about it in his Sunday column).
It's interesting to note that "Sweet Smell of Success" received uniformly terrible reviews but that a dedicated bunch of theatre cognoscenti (Ethan Mordden included) think that the show was misunderstood gem.
While I didn't like the directorial concept of the show, I thought the score was excellent.
well.... was the wedding singer reviewed bad
but to answer the question maybe tarzan... cause it wasn't really that bad
threepenny at roundabout
I always loved the completely split reviews of Follies, such a fun topic to debate about. I love finding people who have a valid reason to hate Follies, such interesting discussions ensue.
Patti and Evita got really bad reviews, and Evita is the only ALW I can stand.

Maybe if the WEDDING SINGER fanatics on here knew how to form a complete sentence, the show wouldn't have such a bad image.

Hahaha, as funny (and untrue) as that is, I wish that if we fans were to write positive reviews we could have saved the show. It just was not that easy.
No, it would still be a bad show.
People that enjoy filthy, low brow humor don't have $111.25 to dish out for a Broadway show, let alone money for transportation to NYC and a place to stay while vacationing here.
Mary Poppins...to me, it is one of the only shows on Broadway actually worth paying $110 for. I'm sorry it didn't get the raves it deserved.
Well you seem to be a SPOONFULL OF SUGAR Wh*re WAT
Did you feel good cause the set moves and Mary flew?
There's more to Theatre than that.
U know i like you though
right?
I just like more difficult Theatre.
But Brantley's review for Poppins was
exceedingly hard.
He seems to be harsh on everything and difficult to read lately.

Just about everything Brantlety write's is exceedingly hard.
The Last Five Years
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
Yup
The Last Five Years was a great work.
Seussical was bashed by Michael Riedel. He had a thing against the Weisslers and decided to make it his mission to kill this show. The score was great as was the cast. I enjoyed it and it should have been better reviewed.
The Real Thing got great reviews and I hated every minute of it. Both the original and the revival.

I'm not a fan of any of the Sondheim shows mentioned. Thus, I completely disagree.
I think Movin' Out was misreviewed in the opposite way. Every review that I had read said it was fantastic, stellar, phenomenal, and more. I've never been so bored in a theatre in my life (except once, when I saw a certain bloody show).
I confess to being a "spoonful of sugar whore." I loved Mary Poppins and can't wait to see it again.
Some "difficult theater" I have loved in the past include Caroline or Change, Sweeney Todd, and The Woman in White. All of these required the audience to pay attention to the lyrics in order to follow the plot. I'm sorry that two out of three of those shows flopped. None deserved to, IMO.
...and I like you too, CurtainPullDowner. Thanks for the clarification!

Caroline or Change
Suessical
The Times... (It wasn't that bad! Common In My Life had a longer run!)
Mary Poppins
The Talkin' Broadway review of the recent Sweeney was pretty brutal. At least, I think it was the TB...
Just a thought.
