>>you don't have to be hurt that it took you so long to figure it out it took me for ever to find out TCP meant and I didn't complain.
& if you really can't figure it out- just ask.
In the context of that thread, I'd probably just call it Sunday.
BE annoys me. I read it as "bee" and my mind jumps to Spelling Bee (another logical abbreviation). It takes about a fraction of a second longer to process, but still. If I can type this whole post on a Blackberry, you can spell out Billy Elliot.
Someone once used TOTC. They left off the A, but I don't think ATOTC is much more obvious.
Unrelated- when was Marat/Sade on Broadway?
Woohoo! I was the source of a rant! Go me!
I don't use acronyms too often, but the whole title is too long, "Sunday in the Park" is a bit long, and "Sunday" is ambiguous. I like SITPWG.
It's a message board. 95% of my target audience is fluent in the same shorthand I am. Why not be more efficient?
"Sunday in the Park with George" is pretty long & I find "SITPWG" a fine abbreviation. But writing "Billy Elliot" as "BE" is completely unnecessary.
Wow! Strong feelings on both sides.
I have to confess that I find often myself stumbling over the acronyms. I think they're best used in the body of a post, not in the thread title. If I don't instantly recognize what's being discussed, I probably won't open the thread (unless the rest of the thread title is really intriquing).
It sort of smacks of text-ese, of which the less the better, IMHO.

I <3 Acronyms.
Now, in conversation, I'll use the shortened versions of titles "Sunday/Sunday in the Park," "Phantom," "Mermaid," etc. On here, I don't use too many of them, but on AIM, yes I abbreviate.
Reginald and Husk--how do the two of you feel about TWOO?
Out of context? I think it's dumb. If I didn't know Husk was an Oz fan, I wouldn't have the slightest idea what you're talking about.
I've never had lack of clarity as a goal. If I'm trying to keep my parents from figuring out what I'm talking about if they happen to be reading over my shoulder, then I think it's fine.
As I said before, my personal preference would be to have a recognizable show title in the thread title (at least a shortened one). After that, you can acronym away to your heart's content.
But I may well be in the minority.

Depends on the acronym. I'm all for typing titles out fully, because it gets freakin' annoying having to sit and think "but what *is* TN?" all the damn time. But for Sunday in the Park with George and You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown, I find that SITPWG and YAGMCB are unambiguous enough and the titles genuinely are so freakin' long that I'm inclined to let it slide. So I guess if a show has five words or more in the title, I'm forgiving, because 1) it's a long title and 2) the longer the acronym, the less chance it stands of being ambiguous.
FOTR is Fellowship of the Ring, no matter what Topol says. Just thought y'all should know, in case you start trying to push four word titles being suitable for acronymisation.

Man! I was doing so well figuring these out until PalJoey mentioned TWOO.
The Wizard of Oz.
On a Judy Garland list I subscribe to, there was a similar controversy about a year ago over referring to her movies as MMISL and ASIB and ITGOS.
I don't have a problem with some acronyms (I myself have used WSS and N2N), but I always read SITPWG as SIT PIG.
I thought I was the only one who always saw it as "SIT PIG!"
In Welsh, "w" counts as a vowel, so I read it as "SIT PUG" ("pug" pronounced like "put"). That's what three years living in a field does for ya. :3
"Next To Formal?"
When I first came across the acronym I thought BATB meant Bat Boy. Then when people were using it in context with Disney and actors who were in Beauty and the Beast I finally got it.
I thought the same about BATB!
My favorite musicals are S, R, and P!
I agree that abbreviations can be annoying. I find that whenever I don't know an abbreviation, it's easiest just to type it into google. I think that if the conversation is about a certain show it's fine to use the abbreviation, but if the topic is more general, with the show not already having been mentioned, it's best just to write out.
OOOH lets play a game! Decipher the acronym!
