I think I might go to New York in the Fall. What should I see? I really loved Hairspray and Wicked. I have seen others aswell but I want to see and up beat show. I was thing Spelling Bee/Dirty Rotten Scoundrels but I was wondering what your opinions were.
Thanks

So do you think Spelling Bee or no? I want to see something with cool effects, and all that stuff. Something VERY entertaining
I can't decide.....So many good shows!

SPELLING BEE & DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS are both wonderfully upbeat shows. Can also reccomend THE PRODUCERS.
I too would stay away from SWEET CHAIRTY & SPAMALOT...and LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA isnt THAT upbeat!

So it seems like it is Between Spelling Bee and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and Sweet Charity.
I am so bad at making decisions.
#8re: What to see?
Posted: 7/24/05 at 8:03pmWell DRS is good for the dirty humor. Spelling Bee is simple and fun. Charity is the perfect example of an "upbeat show", it's VERY bubbly. The music, the set, the jokes.

Well get it OUT of the lead because this is an AWFUL production of a wonderfully classic show that SHOULD be upbeat but just fails at every turn.
DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS is your best bet. Big, Brassy, Splashy and LOTS of fun. John Lithgow is stellar. Norbert Leo Butz is a Tony winner for this role. Sherrie Renee Scott is simply sublime. And Greg Jbara and Johanna Gleason are delicious in their supporting roles. You wont be disapointed w/this one!

^ Why don't you recommend La Cage! OH WAIT. It already closed!
There hasn't been a bad review of Charity here for a couple months. Everyone is loving it. I just recommended PARKS from the board to see it. He didn't know anything about the going in to it - and ended up loving it - he thought it was fantastic.

Posted: 7/24/05 at 8:15pmwoah...talk about bitter! Even if this version of Sweet Charity was in anyway better than the rest of the previous versions, DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS is STILL a better musical!

I do not recommend Sweet Charity...
...I loved Spelling Bee, absolutely hillarious, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels was a great musical comedy, Chitty is magical has a great cast and is a whole lot of fun...Can't go wrong with Avenue Q or The Producers...

Of course my first reccommendation would be to go see Piazza, but it's not an upbeat show. If you get the time to, then go see it. You can get student tickets for orchestra and great seats... the set is beautiful and each lead actor is magnificent.
Anyway, if I was to choose an upbeat show, then I would go see Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. It looks amazing, and you should see the show with the OBC before they leave. I wouldn't reccommend Sweet Charity, just my opinion.

Posted: 7/24/05 at 8:35pmChitty is laughable for children and will stir the heart strings of adults recalling their youth, but it is at heart a big, bloated, over produced wonder. I'd still stick with DRS!

Do what you want, but Charity is the way to go. Chitty is a kiddie show. Charity is a heartfelt show. Check out www.sweetcharitythemusical.com you can get info there.
lol anyway, the people saying avoid Charity are the ones who aren't really into musical from the good old days - they are all about their Rent and Wicked. See a CLASSIC show. With one of the BEST SCORES in Broadway history (statement made my critics, not just me)
Plus scores from the show people are recommending can't even come CLOSE to Charity's score.
Good luck with your with choosing a show!
