What to wear to an audition?

Hi! So I'm going to my first "real" audition (all of my auditions at school are pointless.. everyone gets into the show) on monday, and I'm super nervous! What exactly do I wear? I have to sing 16 bars from a musical theatre song, read from the script, and then I have a dance audition. The only shoes I have for theatre is a pair of tan character shoes. Would those work? And what kind of clothes would be suitable? Thank you!!

A nice dress with your character heels should be fine. If not than a nice blouse and skirt. Maybe wear your hair down for your singing call, and definitely pull your hair back for the dance call.

If it's dance-intensive, wear your character heels with a dress that you can move in. A leotard or spanks underneath, standard.

In that case I'd definitely go with the hair down, and a dress for your singing/acting call.

It's hard to get specific because I don't know your body type, or complexion. Something solid and long sleeved if you have that. If not something with a modest sleeve and neckline that goes below the knee, but not to your ankles.

Oh god. I'm like tiny. I'm only 4'11 and 85 pounds. If I don't have time to get a dress like this(none of my current dresses would be appropriate to dance in), what would you suggest wearing??

I would suggest doing a bit more research about auditions in general, if your dress is stressing you out so much.

For the dance call why don't you get a leotard and tights. If this is community theatre than you might not have to go all out, a T Shirt and a pair of athletic shorts may do the trick.

So you have dresses for the singer/actor call, just not for the movement call, gotcha.

Wear something you like well enough to wear to call backs as well.

The best audition-outfit (ETA advice) I ever heard was a casting director who said actors should always wear their audition outfit to each call back. He'd had a bad experience with a director who decided on "the girl in the purple dress" and simply didn't recognize the young woman when she came back in a different outfit.

Gaveston's advice is spot on re: callbacks.


this is community theater, yes? How you dress isn't going to be a huge deal, and most folks are likely showing up in whatever they wore that day. ANYTHING you do to grab attention is a plus.

Dress in something comfortable but "nice" -- you are, after all, going to a job interview. If what you choose isn't something you can dance in, make sure you bring something you can EASILY and quickly change into. (like if you wear a nice tshirt and a skirt, you could quickly slide dance pants or shorts on and only have to remove your skirt.)


(How do auditions NOT matter just because everyone gets in to your school musical? It still affect WHO gets roles vs chorus and which roles they get. And even more importantly from YOUR point of view, each audition you do gives you practice for the next one.)
