In regards to Roscoe's statement about L. Frank Baum turning over in his grave after every performance of Wicked--I couldn't disagree more. I think he would have loved it.
I know there are a ton of MGM tributes in Wicked the Musical, but there are also a few Baum tributes such as Hammerheads, the Saw Horse, the Green Glasses (taken out of context from the Oz books, but none-the-less represented).
Also, Baum himself presided over the 1902 stage production of The Wizard of Oz which was drastically different from the book (one example is the Dorothy brought her pet cow Imogene to Oz as opposed to Toto). Even Baum's Oz sequels become increasingly more silly and whimsical much more so than Wicked.
Baum might turn over in his grave with the MaGuire's book Wicked, but not the musical.
I like Wicked myself. This is based in the fact that I have always been a huge Oz fan and all previous creations of Oz since MGM have sucked (i.e. Return to Oz which in my view was not faithful at all to anything Baum, Oz, or MGM). But unlike many people's opinions, I think Wicked the Musical is smart and fun.
