I'm rather new around these boards, and I'll admit - I like Wicked. Wicked was definitely not my first musical. I see many flaws in the book, but I do enjoy the majority of the songs and I think there are some great themes throughout the story. Those themes can reach the tweens and far beyond that age. That being said, I personally don't agree with the type of "theme park" approach from the mega merchandise (there are 8 merchandise stands inside the Gershwin) to themed theatre decor. I see those aspects of the production to cover up the flaws in the show. I didn't feel like I was in NYC after entering the theatre, and I'm not sure I liked that.
That being said, I think it's great if there are people who enjoy Wicked and are big fans- especially young people. For many it may be their first theatrical experience. If not, it might just have something that speaks to their own experiences, and that IS important. As these fans grow and have new experiences, their interests will change and hopefully they will find other muscials that they love. If not- well, hey at least it brought some different people to the theatre.
So, that was the Drowsy Chaperone. Oh, I love it so much. I know it's not a perfect show...but it does what a musical is supposed to do. It takes you to another world, and it gives you a little tune to carry with you in your head for when you're feeling blue. Ya know?
