There's not a chance it's going to Broadway.

It got some good reviews off Broadway. I don't think that they are going end with their run at playwrights. I think they would take it further if they could. The reason why I said Broadway as a possibility is because given the fact that there is a trend of movies turned musicals out there that Saved could be added to the ongoing list.
I do love the show. I have seen it 3 times. Four if you count the fact that I am going to closing night. I do agree that it isn't the best thing out there but it is a fun musical. And I disagree about some of the things that have been said about Celia and Julia not looking right together onstage due to their ages.

It may have gotten "some" good reviews, but not ones that would warrent a transfer.
"Glory Days" got "some" good reviews, too.

Posted: 6/22/08 at 6:38pmI like this movie and all but I doubt a musical version of a cult play would be very successful. But then again, what do I know?

Posted: 6/22/08 at 8:08pmThe music isn't bad, but there are a lot of repeated choruses which drag the show down, and to get rid of all the satirical wit of the movie is stupid. Now the show just reads like a cheap imitation of BARE, just with a slightly different plot.

I saw the show and thought it was cute, albeit very flawed. I don't think it has a future on Broadway (but considering some of the crappy shows that have made it recently....being on Broadway does not mean quality).
Excellent cast though.
RentBoy86- did you see the show?

re: Whats next for Saved after its run at Playwrights #16
Posted: 6/22/08 at 9:38pmThere is no comparison with [title of show]....it's like comparing apples and oranges.

Posted: 6/22/08 at 9:42pmi guess but i wen i think of [title of show] i think of the perfect off-Broadway show it's like what they say in the show, "original on Broadway, bitch that is risky" I never thought that it would make it so I'm saying that if it can pull it off any other off-Broadway show can

[tos] is well written and interesting. Saved was boring and poorly written (as well as poorly cast)
definitely not similar.

[title of show] was much better received than Saved was. Saved seemed to have little or no buzz. People rarely spoke about it on the boards.
Adding Machine and Next to Normal were discussed more, and had more "buzz" than Saved did.
Aside from that, much of the talented Saved cast has other projects already lined up.

With Clay Aiken in Spamalot, all of Broadway is singing a collective "There! Right! There!" -Me-

Posted: 6/22/08 at 11:44pmI thought I was in the minority of people who disliked it. The audience I saw it with were crazy about it. I couldn't wait to get out. I'll take Cry-Baby over Saved any day.

Posted: 6/23/08 at 12:33amAfter re thinking it I am not sure it could last on Broadway. For an off Broadway show it was sold out most nights and sold very very well. It sold well enough that it would warrant an extension. Which is something the cast was surprised never happened. I thought it was well written. I will admit that the book isn't the best. But, the music is very good. And the same goes for the cast. After seeing it a couple of times and talking to the cast I got the impression that if something happened to the show after the run off Broadway they hoped to be involved. At least all of them would be the first ones they would ask before they went and did any auditions to recast any of the roles.

winston89, were you at the last performance tonight? So was I, my first/last time seeing the show.
The first act needed work (the score felt repetitive, seemingly to stall a lot of the character/plot development to act two) but, my no means amazed by anything special, I actually quite enjoyed the second act, and the last 20 minutes of the shows were very strong. Stripped to real emotion towards the end of the show, I was quite moved.
I strongly disagree with the poorly cast comment. I thought there were some great choices in casting (Celia, Curtis, Mary, Julia, among others), but I do feel that they were under-directed at times, and that the score should've been worked a bit to suit the talents of the cast originating the roles.
I thought they were some great ideas, and with some more work, it could really be something great. Broadway-bound? Not likely. But definitely a lengthier Off-Broadway run.
BTW, I'd never been to Playwrights Horizons before. What a nice place! Seats were comfy, even for a big guy like me. Only drawback? The inexplicable decision to turn the AC down during pre-show and intermission.
