Wedding Singer... High Fidelity....Things are not looking promising for Legally Blonde - suprisingly! I think Movie-Musicals era is coming to an end.

Donny Osmond's Yankee Doodle Dandee was not and closed after opening night. In fact, it was announced it was closing shortly after the curtain closing that night.

A little off-topic but can someone explain to me why Tom Sawyer flopped? I mean, I know the book is dismal, but I've done the show, Loved every minute of it, and our production was so successful it got extended 3 weeks (unheard of in my old neck of the woods). I think the majority of the music is great (there are a few duds, as with any musical). Was it the cast? The direction? what? Anybody see it? I'm not saying I think it sshould still be running, but I dont see how it flopped so miserably...

I got a comp to see TOM SAWYER during its final week and have rarely been so completely bored out of my mind in the theater. It was like watching paint dry on Aunt Polly's fence. An AWFUL show.
It was LITTLE JOHNNY JONES (not YANKEE DOODLE DANDY) that opened and closed on the same night (back in the early 80s).

Jenn Collella is to the present day what Carmen Mathews was to the 60s and Irra Pettina to the 50s.
Good comparison, Philcrosby. As much as I love Jenn Colella, she always seems to be stuck in these flops: Urban Cowboy, Slut the Musical, fired from The Times They Are A-Changin' after the out of town tryout, and now High Fidelity. I hope she finds work again soon...and in a hit show this time!
Jeb Brown hasn't had much luck either with Bring Back Birdie, Ring of Fire, and High Fidelity...

Wasn't that Caren Lyn Manuel?
Is it just me, or is the trend of closing musicals so quickly growing? I don't remember shows running less than a few months going back just two or three years, but there have been a lot of extremely shortlived flops recently.
If Legally Blonde has a decent run, I will be so upset...
Wow! Jenn Colella seems like a 21st Century Karen Morrow: A talented actress who got stuck acting in a lot of flop shows!
Siamese Dream: Jenn Colella was fired from The Times They Are A-Changin' after the California tryout of the show. Caren Lyn Manuel was fired in previews in New York. They were both fired from the same show in the same role. Lisa Brescia ultimately took over the role of Cleo, and closed the show a few weeks later.

Oh, okay. Thanks for the clarification. :)
"Face Value" directed by Jerry Zaks with Mark Linn Baker closed in previews too!
I don't know why things like this interest me as much as they do - but I love the Imperial Theatre and I did a little looking back into that house's history.
Except for special performances, you have to go back to March, 1977 to find a play with a shorter run than HF. It was the one-man play "Mark Twain Tonight" starring Hal Holbrook. Maybe someone here can let me know if that was a special limited performance or not? It only ran from 3/15 - 3/26/77 - 1 preview and 11 performances.
Before that you had to go all the way back to "Orchids Preferred" which ran from 5/11 - 5/15/1937 for a total of 7 performances.
Mamie, I think that's fascinating too. Thank you for sharing.
Karen Morrow/ Carmen Matthews/ Irra Pettina... I remember reading about all of them in books such as Not Since Carrie... and I love Karen Morrow on the I Had a Ball recording...
In Hi Fi, we have Jenn Colella, Jeb Brown, and Will Chase... all have originated roles in infamous flops...
Who are other notable stage actors/ actresses of the past 30 years whose careers have been beset by flops?
"the Little Prince and the Aviator" played 16 previews and then closed. Did anyone see that one?

Wedidng Singer has run for 270-ish performances. I think that's a rather large difference.

Karen Morrow was TERRIFIC in Drood toward the end of the Bway run.

Marnie - Holbrook has been doing Mark Twain Tonight since the 1960's. It was a huge hit in it's original run. I'm pretty sure the 1977 run was a special engagement. He had been touring around the worl;d with the show and brought it to Broadway for a week. Why else would he open after just one preview?
Back then, they always made a big deal about Holbrook's two-hour make-up job to become Twain (he was in his early 30's when he first did the role). Nowadays, he just slaps on the wig and moustache - no make-up needed!
That's what I was thinking, Jon. I didn't have anything solid to go on, but I was sure that it was a special run. Again, ruling out those special performances, you have to go all the way back to 1937 for a shorter run. That theatre has a lot of history.
Did we already mention Parade Margo?
carrie ran for about 21 performances(inc previews)so has to be on that list somwhere, and lost a lot of money(8 million)
Though the show was a financial success for the RSC during its UK run.The rsc made a profit.
According to IBDB, Carrie had 16 previews and only 5 performances. They show the previews starting at the Virginia Theatre on 4/28 and the official opening 5/12. It closed on 5/15.

ha, CARRIE opened on my birthday i feel special, haha
It really makes me nauseous that shows like Lestat and In My Life have had longer runs than High Fidelity.
