Seriously, you're right
:psst, Hi:
"Have you formed these opinions from meeting him? Maybe he's just shy? "
Meeting him. Overhearing him talk to fans. Reading his tweets.

I've met him at several functions around LA. He was incredibly nice each time. He is pretty shy, and he has a very offbeat sense of humor which people don't always "get". Dealing with a lot of the absolutely insane Buffy fans (including a stalker or two) over the years seems to have made him a little wary.

i would have no problem if he was aloof at stage door or not fan friendly at stagedoor, his job ends when he leaves after bows.
it's the fact that he has said negative things about other cast members that i have heard with my own ears, and that he is incredibly arrogant about it, that bothers me.
What did he say about other cast members?
"If we don't live happily ever after at least we survive until the end of the week!" -Kermit the frog "I need the money... it costs a lot to look this cheap!" -Dolly P. "Oh please, Over at 'Gypsy' Patti LuPone hasn't even alienated her first daughter yet!" Mary Testa in "Xanadu" "...Like a drunk Chita Rivera!" Robin de Jesus in "In the Heights"
"B*tch, I don't know your life." -Xanadu After that if he still doesn't understand why you were uncomfortable and are now infuriated, kick him again but this time with Jazz Hands!!! -KillerTofuIt's in Tom's contract that once he leaves the cast, his image can not be used on promotional material (which includes front of the house images). Therefore, it was decided to not put him on anything so they wouldn't have to change everything once he left.

My wife, daughter and I really enjoyed meeting Tom after a RoA performance. He was very kind and really seemed to have enjoyed performing.
On a somewhat related note, can someone identify who the actress is on the right of Mitch Jarvis in the plaid skirt? Is it Angel Reed? I can't seem to find anyone who looks like her on their website.
Yep, it's her.

Yup, that's Angel. Tom's been perfectly nice to me on Twitter so I can't comment on any negative opinions of him on here!

Oh no, Tom Lenk may have missed this when BroadwayWorld was down. I know how much Tom Lenk loves to keep updated on what people are Tom Lenking about Tom Lenk, so I should give him the fair chance to find this thread.
There was that time Tom Lenk threw a Twitter hissyfit about some fan review he found on Livejournal, via his Tom Lenk Google Alert. The review was entirely fair and mostly complimentary, but they dared to suggest Tom Lenk might need time to settle in the role. Tom Lenk found that absolutely preposterous because Tom Lenk originated the role and was thus above the possible need to gel with a different cast and setting.
Also, he iced Jonathan.

it's his atttiude about things like the above ^ that piss me off.
i have heard him say "i replaced my replacement", "well I am the orignal Franz", "that's whole the role is supposed to be played", "I passed on Broadway the first time", and many others.
OMG, I had no idea what box I was opening when I posted this "Missing Lenk" thread.
That said, I also follow Tom on twitter, he seems like a fun guy. Haven't seen him yet in ROA. In of his tweets he mentioned being heckled once throughout his performance. I can understand why that wouldn't make you the most happy fella.
Also, let's face it, not all Hollywood actors are cut out for live theater. It's a different experience having to perform in live shows day and night. Perhaps this isn't his thing. Whatever.
But thanks for shedding some light as to why he wasn't in the picture. It still strikes me as odd, though.

I don't think Tom's necessarily arrogant, just offbeat, from what people have been saying. Like I said, I can't comment on his behaviour as I've not experienced the negativity. He's obviously stuck on this thing about him originating Franz, which is fair enough, because he did play it in LA - was it for the whole six weeks? - but that doesn't mean he gives the definitive version and he is just making enemies by going on about it.
Problem with his attitude is, having seen both him and Wesley in the role, Wesley was a hell of a lot better. Like, streets and streets beyond what Tom managed. Wesley got the spirit of Franz, plus had excellent vocals, while Tom had his moments but didn't sparkle like Wesley, vocally or acting-wise. I don't know if that's down to charisma or interpretation, but either way, it just worked better before.
It feels like Franz is a little cursed after all the drama with Tom and Wes recently!

You know who made an awesome Franz? Jeremy Jordan. Just saying.
...okay but seriously, my friend and I bumped into him at the ROA stagedoor the night before he was about to start in the show and he was incredibly nice to us, very talkative and seemed really excited to be joining the show. He was actually asking advice on where to find good cupcakes in the city, because he was planning on bringing them in for the cast (like a nerdy new kid on the first day of school, he said) and I thought that was kind of endearing.
Honestly I find it kind of weird how much hatred the guy has inspired off of a couple iffy comments... I feel like it has more to do with who he's replacing than anything else.

It could be. It's gotta be tough trying to fill Wesley's shoes.

Saw him in the role and was pleasantly surprise. I'd say the next best to Wes, though I've yet to see Jeremy Woodard in the role.

I have to agree with you there. The twitter thing - while I do agree he took things out of context, it wasn't nearly as bad as it's made out to be. He basically copied a few lines from the person's review, and then quoted 30 Rock. The fact that it only happened *once* really makes me believe it was him having a bad day, and not a "normal" thing. If he really was a jerk, I'd imagine it'd have happened more than that. So all this hatred for him being human and having a bad day? That seems kinda disproportionate.

It probably only happened once because he saw how much flak he got for it. It's not like he ever apologized or seemed to have seen the light.
To be honest, I'm never gonna see Rock of Ages and I don't care about who's playing Franz. But the Twitter hissyfit was awful to me. I loved him on BtVS so I've always liked Tom Lenk, so if I thought the Twitter thing was blown out of proportion I'd be happy to continue liking him.

If it was only one incident I don't think most of us would give a crap. . .

I met him after the show back in October. He was very sweet and kind and even posed for a picture and then we chatted a little bit about Buffy. He didn't seem arrogant at all.

Since you guys think Tom will read this then I'm going to ask him directly.
Tom, why is it that you appear to be an a-hole?

Having seen both Jeremy Jordan and Jeremy Woodard in the role of Franz, i'd take either of them over Tom any day. I agree that he had big shoes to fill, Wesley was great, and an all around good guy.
I actually liked Tom when he first started. I was nervous about it, but liked him. He's changed the roll a little, as every actor does in a role, I just don't agree with some of his acting choices, but that's just my opinion.
I agree with JP, if it had been one comment that I had overheard, I wouldn't care, but they add up, and they add up to him being arrogant.

I'm glad to hear that he's often polite and open with fans, but that doesn't necessarily negate the purported behaviors. Conversely, I don't assume someone who's prickly at stage door is necessarily arrogant. The two traits aren't mutually exclusive, I don't think.
