Where to splurge / what can be seen from the rear?

I am thinking about treating myself to a little mini break to see some shows in Jan. (Well, actually, it is going to be my reward for finally paying my credit card off.) I was going to make a longer trip in May, but that looks like it won't be possible due to work. I will be making a trip to NYC in Dec with my mom and we will cover: The Color Purple, Cats, The Great Comet, and hopefully rushing Beautiful. I'll also be in NYC for a bachelorette party in Oct, and am hoping to squeeze Fiddler on the Roof in.





In January I would have four slots and I am interested in:



- The Present

- Dear Evan Hansen

- The Front Page

- Les Liaisons Dangereuses





Where should I splurge for closer orchestra tickets? What can be seen from the rear? What tickets are in danger of selling out and I should buy now? While I enjoy plays and musicals equally, I am bit worried this might be too play heavy. I'm hoping to do two shows a day for two days. Are there any outstanding shows that I am overlooking?

If you're going to pick one to splurge on to sit close, it should no doubt be Great Comet. That will be the show which in which you would most likely regret sitting farther away (though hopefully not, if they've done a good job adapting it for the Imperial). If you have the budget, you can even sit onstage.

Robyn, I've heard that sitting on the Comet stage is absolutely amazing. Actors sit down across or next to you all the time and sometimes have conversations and sing to each other across the tables you sit at. It sounds like amazing and rare experience.

carnzee - Do you know of a discount for Liaisons that will be valid for January performances? The codes I see on playbill and theatermania are only valid for performances through Nov 23. Is there another source that I am missing to check for discounts? Thank you!

I personally would go for the cheapest seats for Evan and Les Liaisons. The Music Box and, particularly, the Booth are small theaters and you really won't miss sitting in the orchestra.

I am currently on a semi-annual show watching trip. I purchased the following tickets, based on the following logic:

-- Hamilton -- Orchestra (non-premium). I bought the tix a year ago and was able to get Row Q and R on the center aisle. No brainer...it was never going to be at TKTS, the balcony is pretty far away and not much cheaper than the $177 I paid for my seats.

-- The Humans -- $39 rear mezzanine. Reason: the seats three rows in front of me were $142...seemed like a no-brainer. J1-3-5. Also, when I bought them, I did not realize it would be at TKTS. The seats were perfectly good and I loved the performance. (Also, since at least 1/3 of the action took place on the second level, I suspect that I was no further from the action than the $142 rear orchestra seats). Note: $39 was still $30 less than TKTS orchestra prices.

-- The Front Page -- Bought Orchestra because its Nathan Lane and amazing cast, and I was able to get third row on the center aisle for $142.

-- The Color Purple -- TKTS. Only spent $66 for rear orchestra center, 4 rows from the back. Not need to buy in advance, to pay full price, etc.

My point is that I will sometimes pay top price, sometimes do TKTS which mostly gets you orchestra, and sometimes get the cheapest tickets...generally when the theatre is small. The Booth and the Music Box definitely fit the bill.
