Was "Follies" originally performed without intermission? I thought Act 1 ended after "Two Many Mornings".
Also, I'm guessing I'm wrong for thinking that "Avenue Q" had no intermission. It's been a while since I saw the show.

Posted: 7/2/09 at 3:09pmJon, why is that obvious? I actually didn't really mind ours because the first act ended with Daniel and Ti Moune basically going at it, though it was only suggested, and it sent the audience out into the lobby wondering what was going to happen next now that they had finally gotten together, but with all the odds still against them. Then the top of act two opens with the characters talking about how Daniel and Ti Moune have been together for weeks and weeks indicating a passage of time. I'm not advocating the decision as I certainly believe the show works better without an intermission as the authors intended, but I did really like our tableau.

Yes, the original was performed without intermission.

Posted: 7/2/09 at 3:30pmI know why it was written to be performed without an intermission, but that's a looong show. I saw the show at Encores and am glad they performed in two acts.

Posted: 7/2/09 at 4:43pmIf I remember correctly from Ted Chapin's book if you saw Follies during its out of town tryout the presence of an intermission varied on the night you saw it. It took a while for them to decide once and for all that the show would not have one (and I believe that even then not everybody agreed with the decision fully). If I am wrong, please correct me, as it has been a couple of years since I read the book and my copy is currently in a box in storage several hundred miles away in Ohio.

Jon, I performed OOTI last summer and the intermission was placed between Mama Will Provide and before the Reprise of the song, which also leads into Some Say.
It made complete sense and was obvious, too. It ended Act 1 on a huge number and brought the audience back with TiMoune reprising "My Daniel..." which was great! Some Say was a excellent 'settle-the-audience-back-down' for Act 2 as well.

Byron, during previews the intermission occasionally came after "Who's That Woman?" (with a brief reprise of the song to start the second act). The current script from MTI suggests the intermission is taken after Too Many Mornings, if one is to be taken.
