Sure, there are some great performers on Broadway, but which ones would best fit into the Golden Age?
For Me:
Kelli O'Hara
Carolee Carmello
Mary Testa
Marin Mazzie
Kristin Chenoweth
Emily Skinner
Who else?

Posted: 5/12/06 at 7:13pmI wouldn't peg Mays as Golden Age esque, but the more I think about it, it makes sense.

Posted: 5/12/06 at 7:14pmI'm on the fence about Sherie Rene. I can see it, but her vibrato is just a tad too modern. (Don't get me wrong, I adore the woman)

To me, Sherie just has that old time glamour of the Golden Age. Perhaps her voice may be a bit modern, although she does have the ability to change it ( check out her CD, "The Men I've Had")
Also with all of this Drowsy Chaperone stuff, I think Sutton Foster may be a good choice.

Scott does have the look, I agree. But voice wise, she tends to go into a vocal area that is very modern. Even when she's singing classic stuff. For me, at least.

I am also hesitant about Scott, she's a magnificent performer but I find her style to be rather modern.
My list:
-Gregg Edelman
-Michael Cerveris
-Donna Murphy
-Bebe Neuwirth
-Ruthie Henshall
-Audra McDonald
-Brian Stokes Mitchell
-Victoria Clark

Posted: 5/12/06 at 7:56pmPlease define "Golden Age." I'm not sure what time frame that encompasses. But if it's in the Ethel Merman era (pre Granny Get Your Gun days), as much as I love Audra McDonald, I'm not sure she would fit in, i.e., have the career she's having now despite her massive talent, given the social conditions at the time.

Using the face that golden age performers (at least many) tended to have more classical voices:
Audra McDonald. She makes R&H soar...well anything soar. (If we aren't counting skin color, but we all know if Audra worked in the Golden Age she would have been in something R&H).
BSM, same as above.
Kristen Chenoweth (not as a ingenue but as a character actress.)

Posted: 5/12/06 at 11:08pmI can't see Michael Cerveris in the golden age and not sure about Sherie Scott or donna Murphy. I do think that Christine Ebesersole, Debbie Gravitte, Nathan Lane, Brent Barret, Rebecca Luker, Laura Benanti, and Jonathan Pryce.

I've always felt Ziemba was born a few decades too late. Everything about her has an old-fashioned sensibility.

I think there are two:
Sutton Foster, who actually would have been a huge star because there weren't that many TRIPLE threats back then. Merman could sing and sort of act but not dance. Mary Martin could sort of sing and act well (but began as a dancer). Ann Miller could sing and dance but was so wooden and she left for Hollywood. Ginger Rodgers could dance and act but her singing voice was light But Sutton does ALL THREE so, so well.
And Nathan Lane. He would be a star in ANY era. He reminds me of Jimmy Savo, who was a beloved Broadway star in the 1930's. He was a clown who could sing - and that's Nathan. Lane is probably closer to Bert Lahr or Ed Wynn. Or Bob Hope. How can you look at him and not want to smile?
