mary testa would do very well at the ethel merman-ey things, in my opinion.
kelli o'hara has a very classic tone to her voice, i could see her in the golden age.
i disagree with whoever said gavin creel, which was probably said just cause the guy was in millie. lord. that boy has one of the most modern (albeit beautiful) voices around.

I have been blessed in my life to have seen both of these wonderful women perform less than twenty feet away from me (Gwen in Sweet Charity - the 66 version and in Chicago and Sutton in Millie). You are right that Verdon was a great dancer, in fact one of the greatest individual dancers the stage has known, on par with Astaire and Tommy Tune and Zorina who would have swept anyone off the stage but, I am sorry she sang like a sea otter, with a croaky voice that sounded like she was going to expire in a cloud of Bob Fossee's cigarette smoke. Her acting was okay at best. And that is being very generous. Gwen Verdon, however, had such charisma that you didn't seem to care. Watching her was a pleasure I will never forget.
And I am prepared to say the same thing about Sutton Foster, who cannot dance rings around Gwen but can certainly act and sing so much better than Gwen that I have to say it's a draw.
And BTW, I love Gwen Verdon so don't flame me for daring to say she has an equal.
Just an equal.
Not a better.

"Mary Martin could sort of sing and act well (but began as a dancer)."
SORT OF SING?? SORT OF? Mary Martin was a beautiful singer! She had incredible range and an outstandingly lovely voice. Sort of sing? Sorry, but she is one of my all time favorites and I couldn't let that pass.

I have to toss out another vote for Sutton and also bring up the question as to whether or not her pipes would be as strong as they are in the Golden Age. It was a different era of training vocally, people were raised differently, it could play a factor.
I also immediately thought of Victor Garber.
Mary Testa deserves another mention as well.
In trying to think of someone new, I'd have to say Bebe Neuwirth and Jim Dale.

Patronius, I am green with envy for your avatar.
Bebe Neuwirth
Brilliant.
And sorry to the Mary Martin fan. I must admit I never saw her live. She IS a good singer. I listened to her recordings again and I am sorry I said that.
But Sutton Foster is still excellent.

It's Ginger Rogers... and I'd say she was an actor first and foremost (and it's a huge misconception that she was a dancer first, because she was a far superior actress), then a strong dancer and passable singer, though her voice vastly improved with age.
Sorry, huge fan. :)

Eddie Korbich. love his "Late, Late Show" from Broadway Musicals of 1960.
Any of the big, buff baritones that are around these days for sure!
For some reason I am reminded of the revue "Leading Men Dont Dance". If you have not heard it, its my absolute must buy purchase for any male performer or student out there. Brings a smile everytime I listen to it. When I loaned it to a friend who is a future leading man he fell in love and put it in his showcase.
