Was ILLYA DARLING a real flop? I thought it made money.
How about the Virginia? I don't think that theater's had a show run over a year since the 70s.
If Illya did it made a few bucks
In the interest of accuracy, I will remove it
The Virginia/August Wilson had hits with City of Angels, which ran about two years, and Smokey Joe's Cafe, which ran around five years. And now, of course, Jersey Boys is going to be there for a good long time.
Obviously The Marriott Marquis after Me and My Girl:
Showgun
Nick and Nora
The Woman In White
La Cage revival
The Capeman
The Goodbye Girl (as much as I loved it)
Man Of La Mancha- Raul Julia revival
(Oba Oba 90 and 93 and Forever Tango were special events, Gypsy with Tyne Daly and Peter Pan with Cathy Rigby played other theaters and were return engagements so they really don't count)
(Very sad for a theater that only opened in 1986)

You missed the LA MANCHA revival that starred Raul Julia and Sheena Easton?????? It was unintentionally hilarious! Imagine what it was like when Easton (with her Scottish brogue) uttered the line: "Take the clouds from your eyes and see me as I really am!" I almost wet my pants I was laughing so hard.
Then, too, Julia's accent is Puerto Rican, not Spanish, and his sing-song delivery of his lines became monotonous after a while.
He was fun in Via Galactica

FOTR flopped?!?!?!?
Didn't it run 2-and-a-half years?
"Angel" and "King of Hearts" where also big flops at the Minskoff.
My Fair Lady makes up for all of the Hellinger's huge flops, although it probably did hold the biggest number of them.

Has the Minskoff *ever* had a show that's turned a profit before Lion King? I believe it's considered a cursed flop house.

Was "Irene" a flop?

FOTR never made its investment back despite its two year run.
"Has the Minskoff *ever* had a show that's turned a profit before Lion King? I believe it's considered a cursed flop house."
Well, to be fair The Lion King only recently moved to the Minskoff. It made most of its money at the New Amsterdam Theatre.
Sunset Boulevard did respectful business at the Minskoff with 977 performances.
Like The Lion King, The Tap Dance Kid moved there from another theatre (The Broadhurst) and did a total of 669 performances between them.
The Pirates of Penzance also moved (from the Uris) into the Minskoff and did a total of 787 performances.
I think the undisputed champion in this category was the demolished theatre on West 54th Street, known variously as the Craig/Adelphi/54th Street/George Abbott (and dubbed once by Victor Moore as "the dump of dumps"). Apart from On the Town and No Strings having opened there, before moving to better theatres, as well as good shows that went there near the end of their runs, and the distinguished flop Street Scene, almost every new musical that opened there was a disaster.
Consider:
Allah Be Praised!
Carib Song
The Girl from Nantucket
Nellie Bly
Around the World
Portofino
Happy Town
13 Daughters
Kwamina
The Student Gypsy
Darling of the Day
Buck White
Gantry
I think WHAT MAKES SAMMY RUN, thanks to its star Steve Lawrence, had a decent run at the 54th St. Theatre.

The Hilton:
After 42nd Street, there was Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (as much as I loved it) and Hot Feet (which I wouldn't have wiped me nose on.)
Ever since Aida played the Palace: All Shook Up (wanted to see it at first, seen clips on the website which dare not speak its name, think it looks kinda lame) and of course, the Elton John-Bernie Taupin megaflop:
(Sail Me Away (I like that song, don't get me wrong) starts to play in the background)
LESTAT!!!!!!!!!!!
How about the Gershwin?
Via Galactaca
SeeSaw
Treemonisha
Sweeney Todd (Did it get out of the red?)
Starlight Express
Meet me in St. Louis
Red Shoes
Candide
On the Town
Oklahoma
Seesaw was technically a flop at the Gershwin as it initially did not pay back its investment. Show was enjoyable though
Meet Me In St. Louis was great too!
