"Sunset Boulevard did respectful business at the Minskoff with 977 performances."

Despite running for a while, the show remains one of the biggest monetary flops of all time.

don't forget thou shalt not at the plymouth/ jacobs

the music box has housed quite a few intimate musicals, all of them flops

the nederlander has had tons of flop musicals, and never a hit until Rent

most musicals don't recoup their investment so can, therefore, be called flops.

they outnumber the hits, I would think

Producers2 the Marriot isn't that awful and did have a respectable hit in the revival of Damn Yankees, which I believe did make its money back.

Wasn't Marilyn: An American Fable at the Minskoff as well?

The theatre formally called the Plymouth is not the Jacobs now, it's the Gerald Schoenfeld. The Jacobs used to be called the Royale.

The Damn Yankees revival lost money.

And the Nederlander had its share of hits prior to Rent, including the musical Call Me Mister, the original productions of Inherit the Wind and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf, the acclaimed Tammy Grimes revival of Private Lives, the legendary RSC Midsummer Night's Dream, the original production of Whose Life is it Anyway? with Tom Conti, and surprise hit Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music. It did, however, have a major flop period of 14 years between the closing of Lena Horne in 1982 and the opening of Rent in 1996.

The Longacre. It hasn't had a long-running hit since "Children of a Lesser God" in 1980.

The Longacre did house the hit limited engagement of the Diana Rigg Medea (around 1994?), and at least with Virginia Woolf and Well has recently housed some worthy, critically acclaimed productions, though both lost money.

"Sweeney Todd was definitely not a flop! Don't call Sweeney Todd a flop!!!"

Don't get your panties in a twist. I'm not saying the show is bad, (though i'm not a fan), I'm saying that i'm pretty sure the original production, which played the Gershwin, lost money.

"Sweeney Todd was definitely not a flop! Don't call Sweeney Todd a flop!!! "

The original production wasn't actually a flop. Yes it closed in the red, but with the dvd sales and such, it eventaully recouped.

The revival, however, recouped very quickly.

No, the Ford Center/Hilton has yet to house a genuine financial success.
