Chicago does not have a stop clause with the theater. It will never close.

I thought phantom was the only show to not have one.

Nearly every Broadway show has a stop clause with the theater owners.

I remember back in summer 2008 when Phantom closed down for 4 days to update the vintage 80's sound tech, I commented to the box office staff that this investment must mean that the producers expect Phantom to stay open for a long time. They replied that it would probably last another 5 years. Of course it has now been 8 years!

Part of its current appeal is that the show sounds very contemporary, but that runs the risk of sounding dated a few years later. A traditional-sounding score isn't going to be as "grabby" right away, but it won't sound dated in the future. Also, a lot of the appeal is teen/young adult-driven, which can be a very fickle audience."
This conversation was had recently in the unpopular opinions thread, I don't think the music is as contemporary as people say. It's genres of music that aren't particularly new so I don't think it will age too poorly anytime soon.

Don't kill me but when I first heard that there was going to be a rap musical my first though was this gem from a 1992 episode of saved by the bell
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=m8M5CXq3O84
it's a concept that appears to have been trendy among teenagers for over 20 years now so I don't think that Hamilton will go out of style soon.

Hamilton's hip hop score is based on the mid to late 1990s rap and R&B sound, which has more or less survived as a prevalent style to this day. There's nothing as "untested" as, say, a dubstep number.

I think some of the shows mentioned are now a staple part of visiting New York. I'm a flight attendant from London and can fly to NYC upto 5 times a month. So many of my passengers talk of Broadway and most are going to/want to see Lion King, Wicked, Phantom, B.O.M or Chicago (no one can get a ticket for Hamilton!) I find this a little strange, as most of these shows are running in London and I personally like to watch something I can't see at home (but that's just me I guess)
Of course, all the shows mentioned have loyal repeat visitors and many New Yorkers who haven't seen them, would consider them as option for a night at the theatre. In my personal experience though, and I only speak for UK visitors, these shows have become somewhat of a tourist feature, along with other NYC landmarks. I can't see this changing anytime soon, so this will ensure most of these shows will continue for the foreseeable future.

Looking at last season's shows, I think "Something Rotten" has another year in it or so. "An American In Paris" does very well during tourist seasons, but with the upcoming renovation and lifting of the theatre, I can see it closing in two or three years unless it moves to another theatre. I could see "Fun Home" running about the same length, but since it already recouped it really just depends on if the demand is still there. It's a beautiful show in the perfect theatre! Does anyone know what Lincoln Center might replace "The King and I" with? It's been doing pretty well, so I think it has at least another year.
"Beautiful" has another three to four years in it at least, and I think "On Your Feet" could keep running for awhile as well. It's been doing really well for itself, even without major award love. The two long-runners I'm curious to see last are "Jersey Boys" and "Kinky Boots." "Chicago" has a while in it, and "The Book of Mormon" has another five years in it for sure.

The St James is closing in January for a refurbishment. Unless the show moves to another theatre, which is unlikely, then it has about 7 months left. Hopefully with the new principles arriving soon, the summer season starting, and the earlier than expected closures of other shows, the grosses will continue to be good, until it's run ends. I love this show more than most, but know it won't be here this time next year, sadly.

Have the grosses been good in recent weeks? I'm not sure it will be around for another year.

Finally found a thread on this topic. It's from 2004:
https://forum.broadwayworld.com/readmessage.php?page=3&thread=100278
Most posters predicted that Rent, Chicago, or Phantom would not make it past 2005. The Rentheads of course got upset about that talk. It seems that the rumor at the time was that Jerry Springer the Opera was eyeing the Majestic. I have definitely read stories of 2004 being a tough time for Phantom. The advertising campaign at the time, "Remember Your First Time" was meant to turn into a closing ad campaign as well. But then the movie came and 2005 was more or less a complete sell-out for Phantom, especially over the summer.
I also enjoyed the suggestion that Lion King would close to make room for Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Someone did mention that the Producers might close once Nathan and Matthew left. I had hoped that someone would have made an impassioned plea about how the show is the draw, not Nathan and Matt, but alas, nobody did.
