After two Doyle Sondheim shows that polarized lots of people, I think a "straight" mounting of Sunday in the Park With George will be a revelation for audiences and critics. As much as we (most of us) all love it, it's going to be new to so many people.
And with Mermaid sounding like the kiddiest of the Disney musicals, and YF replaying the vaudeville style of The Producers, an ardent beautiful show like Sunday may be a surprise hit.
I also think that Sunday is precisely the kind of Sondheim show that general audiences "catch up to" years after the original production.
I think the very romantic elements of the show in both its characters plotline as well as the themes of the struggle being true to yourself might ring more universally now than they did years ago.
Or not. But I have an instinct that with all the super slick musical comedies that have surfaced in the past couple of years, this may take off. And sometimes genius trumps slick.
Frankenstein but Mermaid will have more staying power in the long run
Sunday won't get tourists unless they are BWW members. Cabaret was successful because it was not a limited run and that there was a movie of it.

Um, YF and LM have been getting good reviews. You have tom Schumacer and Mel Brooks, both have large egos.
I agree with Roxy
YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN will be like THE PRODUCERS and not run nearly as long as THE LITTLE MERMAID will. I dont even know if YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN will run as long as THE PRODUCERS did, because it certainly doesnt have the buzz or the ticket sales as THE PRODUCERS had, as far as I know.
I think they'll be about equal, though, I mean, they appeal to totally different age groups, as someone pointed out earlier.
