Every year, even though they may be worthy, some shows do not get any Tony nominations. Last year, I believe 7 shows did not get any nominations.
Which shows do you think will be empty-handed this year?
Young Frankenstein, I hope.
Glory Days
Little Mermaid
Cry Baby

Glory Days is not even eligible so obviously it won't get a nomination. This thread is talking about shows that are eligible but won't. Good examples from the past years include Brooklyn, Pirate Queen etc.
Pygmalion
The Farnsworth Invention (unfortunately)
The Ritz
Yeah, it's a shame about Farnsworth. Jimmi Simpson was really excellent.
Young Frankenstein, much as I did not like it, deserves nominations for Christopher Fitzgerald, Andrea Martin, and the set design.
Cry Baby will get one nomination for Best Choreography.
The Little Mermaid may get a nomination or two- perhaps Best Orchestrations?
Several plays will be completely shut out- I don't think Pygmalion, Mauritius, Cymbeline, The Country Girl, or The Ritz will be remembered at all. Other than Glory Days (and possibly Mermaid) every musical this season will get at least a nomination. However, Grease deserves to be shut out, but it will fill out the Best Revival category.
I think Little Mermaid will get one or two but won't win
The Ritz
The Farnsworth Invention
Glory Days (obviously)
Mauritius
Cymbelline
Pygmalion
A Bronx Tale
and possibly Cat on a Hot Tin Roof

The musical revival category only needs to fill 3 slots, unless the rules have changed this year.
Grease might be shut out.
I'm hoping Pygmalion is remembered for something. I really enjoyed it.
Adam, without being rude, I'd really like to know why Christopher Fitzgerald and Andrea Martin deserve Tony nominations for shameless mugging. I think they're both wonderfully talented but Fitzgerald's wandering accents and incessant hamming really got to me, in particular. I suppose you could blame the direction but really, why are those performances award-worthy simply because they fared the best with dreadful material?
No, they have to fill all their slots, just like they had to when they were forced to nominate The Threepenny Opera a couple of years ago. The Administration Committee ruled that they need to fill all available spots when there were enough nominees.
ShbrtAlley44, you're not being rude....as I said, I did not enjoy the show very much at all. However, the only times the entire evening I ever laughed, or had a good time, were when those two were onstage. I didn't think they were mugging- I thought they were just being funny. Their roles are kind of the looniest roles in the piece, and they played it up.

Pygmalion
The Ritz
A Bronx Tale (Unless they nominate Chazz, which doesn't look good)
The Farnsworth Invention (Which is a shame, because I really enjoyed it. I would nominate it for sound design.)
Mauritius (Probably)
Old Acquaintance
Cymbeline
Why isn’t Glory Days eligible? Does a show have to run a certain amount of time to be eligible?
I must be mistaken, Adam! A member of the nom committee told me that they must fill at least 3 slots if they have shows to fill them. That's why 3Penny was nominated.
I could be 4 this year...lord knows they change the rules all of the time.

I'd be very surprised if GREASE got any at all. And I'm suspecting that THE HOMECOMING and NOVEMBER might get shut out, too. And that terrible ROCK AND ROLL thing, I'd love it if that got no bloody nominations at all.

The only reason they were forced to nominate THREEPENNY was that it was the 3rd show. They has to be at least three for there to be a separate revival category. (Notable exception was OKLAHOMA vs. INTO THE WOODS.) But no, they don't have to nominate GREASE, as there are already 3 others.
"(h) Revivals. Each year the Tony Awards Administration Committee shall determine whether there shall exist in quality and quantity a sufficient number of Revivals to merit the granting of an Award for Best Revival of a Play or Musical and, if so, the Tony Awards Administration Committee shall also determine whether there shall be a separate Play and Musical Revival category; provided, however, that if there are at least three such plays and three such musicals, there shall automatically be separate Play and Musical Revival categories."
"I must be mistaken, Adam! A member of the nom committee told me that they must fill at least 3 slots if they have shows to fill them. That's why 3Penny was nominated. "
Yeah, there's never a bit of consistency with those people. I guess we'll find out for sure on Tuesday!
Thanks Yankee, that's what I thought!
Thanks Adam, we indeed shall see Tuesday!

While I wish it would be Passing Strange, it will receive 7 or 8 nominations... but shows that I suspect will be shut out would include: November, Pgymalion, The Ritz, The Country Girl, and Grease. Perhaps Mauritius, Old Acquaintance, Cat On a Hot Tin Roof, Cymbeline, and most unforunately of all, The Farnsworth Invention.
Cry-Baby will get at least a choreography nomination.
Cry-Baby will probably WIN best choreography.
I could maybe see Brooks sneaking in for The Ritz, but it's VERY tough competition.
Maybe Annika for CAT
Nathan will get a nom for NOVEMBER
I don't see Cry-Baby winning choreography.
If Passing Strange wins for Choreography there is no justice
Crybaby choregraphy is flat out brilliant.
Well, it's Rob Ashford and it's been getting great reviews---it's the one thing the critics seem to agree on...I'd lay money on it.
Don't count out IN THE HEIGHTS for choreography...just as brilliant as CRY BABY and more "unique". It will be a tight race...
